I've shot lots of deer with the .35 Whelen and one with the 338-06. Through tough times, I had to part ways with both. 20 years later everything is in good shape and I'm looking at 3 cartridges. Which would you choose for a 250yd deer gun in the mountains in the East. I have smaller calibers that will work, but I've always liked a big caliber for deer and bear especially in the mountains to anchor either. My choices with one extra honorable mention.
Sauer 101 9.3x62
Tikka laminate stainless, bored by JES to 338-06
Same gun bored to the Whelen
*Henry all-weather 45-70

I'd either do the 9.3 or the tikka 338-06, don't see any need to rebore to 35, deer won't know the difference

That 338-06 is plenty of medicine to anchor a deer or bear

I bought a Henry all weather 45-70 to use this season. Ammo is high tho!
Deer Camp! about as good as it gets!

I have been shooting a 9.3x62 for the last 10-12 years. I have had a 350 Rem and a 35 Whelen and sent them both away and kept the 9.3. So that is where I would point you. Great caliber. Hits hard. Not much recoil. Doesn't cause a lot of bloodshot meat. And it has been around for longer than both the 30-06 and the 375 H&H and that says a lot.

All are good choices.....but, Iād lean toward the 35 Whelen! Iām a big fan of 35ās for all year use. For off season plinking, you can use ārelativelyā inexpensive handgun bullets for good, low velocity, low recoil plinking or varmint hunting!
Also, there is lots of brass available, if āpush comes to shoveā! memtb

Of your choices, there are a lot more bullets to choose from in .338 caliber than .35.
Either way you can't go wrong with a Tikka.

Well I own both a 35 Whelen and a 338-06 A-Square and I would suggest the Whelen if you do not hand load and the 338-06 if you do.

Iād agree on Bullet selection. Both will work but ...... Of your choices, there are a lot more bullets to choose from in .338 caliber than .35.
