I have given or loaned my 2006 Honda Element to my daughter who lives in Seattle. She walks to work, but needs a car on the week end. She lives in a high rise condo and parks on the street.
The converter was stolen a week ago. Her boyfriend had the car towed to the Bellevue Honda dealer. They gave a high estimate.
The insurance company sent a low check, $2.5k.
I called Bellevue Honda. They said $2.5k is ok....... but they have (9) Honda Elements on the lot now waiting for ordered converters. I asked the dealer if the new converter would get stolen as soon as my daughter parked it again. The dealer said, "Yes, it will probably get stolen again as soon as you park it in Seattle."
I called my daughter and told her of the risks for a new converter. She said catalytic converter guards are $400, but she found one on Ebay for $300.
A catalytic converter chastity belt?

What a Catalytic converter?

Sheriff here is offering free etching and serializing for your cat here. Seems like it’s working so far.

I've read that a thief can hit your car and be gone with the cat in under 2 minutes. Battery operated saws work for the bad guys, too.

Too bad those thieves won’t work that hard on a legitimate job. A guy would sure like to bounce a couple of ounces of #8 shot off the pavement to discourage such behavior.

That's a cryin a$$ shame that we put up with the low life good for nothing space wasting thieves. The last major burglary I had, the poeleece were like why don't you have cameras, why don't you have alarms, you have insurance don't you? you can't have nice XXXX and park it outside (In my own driveway on my own property)
We ( people in this country/society) continually make excuses/ justifications for low life good for nothing thieves. Well that's my son/daughter/ nephew/ best friend/ long time friend, and I love them/ care for them etc. etc. etc.
IMO I should really be able to leave anything laying on the front porch or anywhere else, and have it still sitting there as I left it when I return. I don't blame someone and point fingers at someone if they want to spend their own money on a nice vehicle or clothing or wear jewelry or whatever. If they spend all their money on things then don't have money to buy food, that's their problem too But it's their stuff and others shouldn't diddle with things that they know damned a-well don't belong to them
There's a drughead right across from here that needs to be back in prison where he's been to several times. After his last release, he went right back to getting high and stealing and making bastard babies and living as a professional bum and daylong sleeper. Grandma and his family make excuses and enable him and blame dope and the county gubmint for his uselessness. He'd have to have intensive training to get work as a door stop. The sad part is that there's many thousands just like him

It was a big thing out here a decade or so ago and seems to have been making a big resurgence lately. Walmart, Costco, mall, HD, etc……parking lots are big targets out here.

I wonder how much a thief could get for a stolen catalytic converter. Whoever buys them has to know they are stolen.

Too many excuses, and not near enough punishment to deter property, trespassing crimes, etc. A man's home and property is sacred. SACRED. It should be treated as such.

Scrap yards are supposed to be cracking down but where there is money, there is a way.
Some ain’t worth much. $50-$100. Others can be worth 10+ x that.

I wonder how much a thief could get for a stolen catalytic converter. Whoever buys them has to know they are stolen. I read that depending on the type, they can be worth up to $400 as scrap. Some have more platinum, etc. in them so they're worth more. Of course the salvage places know they're stolen but money talks.

Thieves work on a strict risk/reward basis. We have made it so that the risks are almost always less than the reward. That is what has to change.

Sounds like an opportunity to hunt over bait. Park that car in the correct location, sit back a hundred yards in another car or in a condo window, and wait for them.

We need less tax for less police and fewer laws preventing us from handling our own business. Seriously. Cops can't do all the things people ask them to do no matter how much money you throw at them. And if they're just going to shoot people we may as well do it ourselves and save the tax.

Buy the cat on Rock Auto and take it to a muffler shop to get it installed. California compliant cat is $580, if you need 2, that's still less than $1200. Even if shop charges $500 to install them, you still walk away with $800 in your pocket.
If you dont have to meet Carb standards, a good EPA cat is less than $400. Dont buy the cheapest one, but no need to buy the highest priced one either.
Dont know how hard it is to change on the car, but I changed one on my truck about 2 months ago.... took about an hour. Most, I wont say all, cat convertors bolt on.
