You might also try and chamber a different brand of ammo. I doubt that is the problem but the way to rule out the brass after the suggestions, cleaning, etc above you could give that a try. Not to fire but to cycle test it.

I wonder if he ever degreased the chamber and bore and got his rifle working? from reading his post that would be my first guess, my second would be to try different ammo, then if still no success send it back to the Savage warranty dept.

I see this is you first post.
WELCOME to the 'fire'.
Since you're new here I'll be nice. Good luck with your savage.
Jerry I am not so tactful...get rid of the POS and go buy something decent.

Arent you supposed to run factory ammo in straight pulls? Read someplace that folks reloading would have lockups in Merkel Helix.

Reloads are fine in straight pull rifles. My Blaser 30-06 and 9.3x62 barrels have never had a factory round chambered.
Brass should be full length sized, that is the only “requirement”

This is why I never buy a new model that is hasn't been tried. Just like with cars, I wait until a few years pass before I consider it. That way some real world people have tried them out for a while.

I own about five savage rifles. They shoot very well. Ejecting a spent case is another subject. I watch YouTube videos on rifles and just about everyone with a savage the guy will state a failure to eject and wonder why. Because it’s a Savage. They guarantee that.lol. Good luck. Edk

Please see Big Stick for advice.
now, one question are these reloads?

Buddy has a Savage 30/06 he's been having problems with. Says the bolt doesn't lock down and if it's partway up the rifle won't fire. He's bumped the bolt twice while carrying and missed game shots twice over it. I'd chuck that POS in the river if it was mine.

Your friend is complaining about a safety feature. If he fired the rifle without the bolt fully in battery, would likely be killed. What does he think is holding back that 55K psi in the case when he pulls the trigger?
I would suggest he learn to pay closer attention to his rifle, or maybe consider a lever action.

Hoping for an update on this, just out of curiosity, mind you, not any interest in acquiring one.

Can't figure out why people are attracted to these straight pull actions.

Just reposting this. It also gives the company a chance to correct any deficiencies. This is why I never buy a new model that is hasn't been tried. Just like with cars, I wait until a few years pass before I consider it. That way some real world people have tried them out for a while.

Can't figure out why people are attracted to these straight pull actions. If you watch some of the driven boar hunting videos you’ll see that good ones shine at that in the hands of a skilled wielder. Just how that figures into hunting here, I can’t say. We use pumps, autos, and levers for fast shooting. Just guessing, but for a reloader, a turnbolt seems better. The Impulse bare weighs about all I want to tote in the woods, and ain’t exactly a raging beauty either, but that’s subjective. Hope this gets sorted out and isn’t typical of the model.
