Understand how a deer reacts to a good hit to the vitals, and, if you get a good hit and see the "death kick" but it still runs away, DON'T go after it immediately.
Let it lie down and die. Give it an hour or else you're in for a long, sucky chase as you keep jumping it and pushing it.

Good tip Goalie. Rule when I was a kid. Wait at least 1/2 hr before tracking. So when I was young it was pretty much wait for my dad to come get me after a shot. It was a perfect amount of time to get a thermos cup of hot chocolate. Now a days, I wait until I’m done shaking. What I have a hard time with is when one of the young kids shoot, is to get them to stay there until I get there. But….they’re 16 now. Time for them to succeed/fail on their own.
Camp is where you make it.

Me and my son manage to get halfway to the place we were gonna hunt before we realized we forgot our bow bullets. A bow ain’t no good without arrows. That will not happen again!!! Can't lift up my mouth, lol

You’ll start shooting big deer when you quit shooting little deer.
Young deer quit growing when you shoot them. Or if they die of disease, or predators, or from fighting, or from vehicular battle, or road hunters, or harsh weather, or parasites, etc. etc.

Just be in the woods and learn to be a woodsman.

Most important advice I can think give: Sit still and be quiet. Fugg that. That's a recipe for boredom, man. I can't imagine hunting like they do north of the border - sitting in a box blind from sunup to sundown, for days on end, freezing. When practicable, I prefer to go after 'em.

There’s no more important skill than being accurate on your first shot. That is the difference in filling your tag or not most of the time That I agree with 100%.

There is no one plan to fit all locations. Much has to do with location, such as wether its a farm area or wether its a big woods area. Find the food source and the deer wont be far from it. Mast crop food such as acorns can vary from plentifull to little to none from year to year. So it boils down to scouting before the season.

Always have unscented baby wipes handy!! In camp, your backpack, day pack, in your vehicle. They are indispensable.

Young deer quit growing when you shoot them. It’s amazing how that works. My area put in a 13” spread requirement about 15 years ago before that it was constant to hear how there “just aren’t the genetics here for 140” deer”. Since then a couple 160” have been taken in that same area with the bad genetics and several 130 plus deer taken every year

I would add to hunt the late morning. Most of the bigger bucks I’ve seen are between 9:30 and 11:30. They learn to pattern hunters just like we pattern then

It's not really a choice here. I much rather spot and stalk like out west. However, I have killed a few still hunting moving super slowly when the leaves are wet. Treestands just work in the south.
