I'm probably the only guy on the planet that would be reaching for 4064 and a 140 gr Ballistic Tip, for a 270 hunting round.

I think they’re great hunting bullets. Brother and I have been doing real well with both the 130 and 140 version.

I don’t know if I gain much over your load for hunting but I just wanted to try it. Bob said back in the day he used some RL25 and got good speed so I decided to give 26 a whirl. Works fine but I’m not sure I’d monkey with it if your 4350 load shoots great.



Nope you aren’t the only guy. Usually with any new 270 that’s the first load I’ve tried to see if the gun would shoot. Usually it’s a 2900 FPS load and with excellent accuracy in any sorta straight rifle.

Seafire, I ain't frowning at it. I found out how good it is in 06, after I found out how great it is in 30-30! Very consistent stuff from every perspective! No speed demon in a 30-30, but everything else A+

I have found over the years of loading for the 270 Win. that with 130's several powders work very well 4064 being one of them. 4064 just never gave me the speed I was looking for but I tried it more than an a few times.
My go to powders are IMR 4350 and IMR 4831. They just seem to give me results without a lot of fuss. I have also tried several of the R series of powders, just got better speed/ES/SD with the two IMR offerings.

I did try R26 with some 150's and got very good numbers with it but did not like the recoil of the 150's vs 130's. I have killed a lot of deer over the last 45 or so years with 130's so I don't feel that I am leaving anything on the table using them for whitetail and mule deer.

For 130 gr bullets, I'm now using IMR 4451. For 140 gr, I like RL 16.

+1. Three M700s shot lights out with RL22.

My 270’s & 280’s do fine with RL17.
IMR4350 and RL22 are just as good.
No flies on the 4831’s either.

Three shot groups back to back. The Old 270 is just damn hard to beat… I don’t care who ya momma is! 😆

Damn nice Gunnut.. that RL17 load is a good one too. Pretty much a 3050-3100 load and usually quite darned accurate, as you’ve shown!

I stumbled on that load with ‘17 right out of the gate with that Winchester, very first load I tried. The rifle is bedded in a low comb stock which I’m not crazy about but…. If it ain’t broke-

I’ve got an extry MCM Hunters Edge I’ll drop it in and see how she acts. Every time I get wheels balanced & rolling under a Pre’64 I’m impressed.

You’re damn right buddy. Ain’t much better than Hunters Edge on a P64 in my book. Unless it’s a Legend.

Rick Dredge uses the 17 load a bunch. Seems to be good in multiple guns.

Thanks Beretz.....2900 fps is just fine by me.... to achieve the equivalent point of impact of faster 4350 and 4831 loads, all I have to do is raise my scope elevation by two clicks and I am right there... but 4064 never fails to be accurate unless something is really out of line with the rifle...

but that load, and the rifle being a Model 70 Sporter, and the scope on top being a Leupold 3 x 9.. the world just seems all in balance....

same bullet and change the powder charge to 30 grains of RL 7 or 4198, makes the 270 a very light recoiling rifle quite capable of dropping any deer on the planet at 250 yds or less.... with a little practice 300 yds is real do'able also....

beretzs, here's a comparison with my M70 supergrade with 24" barrel using RL26 with the 130 TBT. 61. 0 grains (top), average was 3157 fps. With 62.0 it was 3227 fps. i have RL17, haven't tried it though. Great rifle and buck too BTW!

Yep that's what I was thinking. Hard to beat that combo....I'm just glad I grabbed a bunch of the TBTs when they were around $24 a box!

Man, you aren't kidding. Rocky Mountain Reloading had a slew of 130 pull downs and I only got 250 of them. Wished I had gotten a 1000 of them little devils. They're accurate and when they were even 24 a box were a steal. Live and learn I guess.

I haven’t read the entire thread yet, but H4831 is one of the more temp stable powders out there, whereas IMR4831 is not particularly stable. I have roughly 4K rounds of chrono data going back to the early 80’s with 270’s, the majority with H4831. The pre-Extreme powder produced 50-60 fps higher velocity than the current H4831 in 270’s.

Depending on which lot of powder, RL26 produces 100-175fps more velocity in the same 270’s, using the same brass. RL26 is not quite as stable as H4831, but velocity loss is small, and the loads shoot to the same POI.

I use regular cut because that’s what I always have used. When I tried H4831SC it was a bit faster burning, at least with that particular lot.

Along with the RL17 I already have, H4831 is for sure my first tests. I'm gonna try RL26 somewhere down the line, maybe few others. Seems 4350 is very good in 270 & 30-06 so I'll probably get around to it also.
