I doubt it's pronounced "Barney". But certainly a valid question; I mispronounced Aagaard for decades.

reo,
It's BARS-ness--but I answer to almost anything resembling it.
Quite a few people say bars-NESS, but probably even more leave out the middle "s" and say either BAR-ness or Bar-NESS.

What's the old saying?
I don't care what you call me, but don't forget to call me for dinner.

Without really looking at it hard, I pronounced it Barnsess for a long time.
Glad you're OK with variations.
But dang it, I'm fresh outta checks.

Barnsness is also fairly common.
When one of my uncles was in high school in the 1930s his friend called him Parsnips. Things changed by the time I want to high school, when some of my friends nicknamed me Brassnuts.

Never occurred to me.
Brass nuts.
LMAO!!
Actually, I don't see how you get from Barsness to "Brass Nuts" any more than Hornady becomes "Hornaday." That kind of inattention to detail makes my teeth itch...but maybe that's why I seem to be suited to work in the aviation field.

I usually just pronounced it "Mule Deer".
Our family name is not one most have seen, different enough I had teachers all the way up to university call roll using last names, get to mine and say "Gene".
Mom always told me it was my name and I could pronounce it "Smith" if I chose to.
Barsness always seemed pretty easy to me, but then again my mom's best friend growing up was married to an Ostachowski. And my godmother is a Pazaras.

We are all different. Does it bother you, too, when a singer sings "per a lous" fight in the Anthem instead of "per i lous" fight?

I know a guy who pronounces Cabela's, Cabrella's, Unertl, Urinelli, and refers to horse mounted soldiers as the calvary.

Craigster,
Sounds like he's dyslexic. I have a friend who's much the same way. He mispronounces several brand names, though some are fairly common, such as Savorski for Swarovski.
My favorite Swarovski mispronunciation, came from a friend who was in their sales/marketing department around 30 years ago. When he traveled he often dropped in on stores which sold Swarovski optics--and back then there weren't nearly as many as today. One trip took him to Alabama, where he stopped at big sporting goods store and found the optics counter.
He pointed to the Swarovski section and asked the guy behind the counter, "You sell many of these expensive scopes?"
The guy said, "Yep, we sell quite a few Sooverwhoskies."
My friend said, "I believe it's pronounced Swarovski."
The guy said, "Not in Alabama!"
