I've always been told fox squirrels pretty much stay in the same location as small as 1/4 acre for their life. I've got a solid black and silver with black head one that hangs out around one of my ground blinds.

I saw them at my Aunt's place in SE Minnesota. Have never seen one this far north though.

North Hays county west of Buda Tx used to have a bunch of those melenistic (sic) whitetails. Old Ruby Ranch comes to mind.

Jag, hell I couldn’t chew damn thing.

Fox squirrel black color phase most likely. If they’re 50% bigger or up to twice big as a gray squirrel that’s what you’re seeing. There a LOT of those in the timber over by the Mississippi river. At times I’ve seen more of them than grays.
There are several color patterns. As someone mentioned above, some will have a black head and different combinations of white noses and/or white ears and a rusty red body. Sometimes you’ll see a really white tail just like a red fox.

Westchester County NY is loaded with them. I've seen many of them on the NY/CT border as well. As someone else posted, they are a common variant of the Gray Squirrel. I've also seen two or three that were chocolate brown.

I've seen two one our place in recent months. Both big black fox squirrels. My squirrel season might start Tuesday morning after the cool/dry weather rolls in.

There were black fox squirrels around the TXDOT office in Tyler. Some were sorta charcoal grey and some were coal black.

Usually Fox squirrels and little slightly isolated populations of them can get where practically all of them are black. There is a good course around here that is covered up with black fox squirrels. The little bastards will unzip your golf bag looking for treats while you are away from the cart.

I know a guy that did the same in Michigan... now they are about a quarter of the local population in less than 10 years. They breed like they are on welfare!
