I picked this up a few years back and just got around to shooting it today. I have a couple "newer" model 99s in 300 Savage and 243 Win, but this one is an 1899, I believe.

It is marked, "30-30", has a straight comb stock, and is a takedown model. Barrel is marked, "Manufactured by Savage Arms Corp, Utica NY, USA".
The second line has a series of patent dates, the latest which is June of 1903. Serial #260xxx. Year of manufacture may be 1924, from what little I have found.

Anything else you can tell me about this would be greatly appreciated. I will attempt to attach a couple of photos.

Thanks in advance!

Ok. Photos are not cooperating. I'll work on them and post asap.

I cannot get photos "small" enough to post. If anyone can help me get them posted, I'll be glad to email photos. Again, thanks!

It will be a model 99 made in 1924. If a takedown:

A 99B will have 26” barrel and crescent buttplate.
A 99D will have 22” barrel, shotgun style buttplate and a blade front sight in a dovetail.
A 99F will have a 20” barrel, shotgun style buttplate and a small blade front sight in an integral base on the barrel.
A 99G has pistol grip and checkering.

PS: yes, it will be stamped Savage 1899 on the receiver. They did that, but it was catalogued as a 99. Savage is never easy. grin

Yep, the stories these guns could tell from 97 years ago would be amazing.

These old ones will grow on ya. Be careful. grin

A follow-up question.
It has seen fair use but it's in great shape for an almost 100 YO firearm.
I have 30-30s in Winchester, Marlin, and Stevens, both lever and bolt action. I usually hunt with those, as most shots in the piney woods of East Texas are well within 60 yds.
I REALLY want a 99 in .308 for hogs.
What trade value should I affix to the 99F, in 30-30, in such a trade?

Or, should I just attempt to buy a 99 in 308 outright?

Your opinion matters, or I would not have asked.

At 60 yards there's almost no real difference in killing power between the 300 Savage and a 308. I understand wanting to have a 99 in a different cartridge even if it's not that different than what I have... we're all gun loonies here. But you won't gain much for power.

First choice, I'd just buy another one in 308 if you can afford it. A 1950's lever safety 99F, 99EG or 99R would be a good investment if you can find one for a good price. If just for hunting, than any of the post-1960 models are perfectly good.

If needing to trade.. 99's in 300 are the most common 99's and would be the easiest to replace down the road if you come to regret selling it later. So unless your 300 is in a rare model or variation or in very high condition, I'd consider trading the 300 for a 308.

But it's a personal choice.

I would be trading the 99F, chambered in 30-30. Not the .300. Reason being, I have ample supply of 308 ammo FMJ and SP, for shooting hogs. I have a "decent" supply of 30-30, and less than 100 rds of 300.
And thanks for the info!

I have a 99C in 308 with a Nikon 3X9 scope that I would trade. You can email pics of the 99F to me at wyomingsavage1895gmail.com.

That will be a tuff nut to crack.

Wyo1895 offer should be seriously considered. Can't go wrong with him.

He has exactly what you want.
