They were pretty scarce here in Fairbanks for a while but they seem to be coming back. Lots of trap and target loads but there is some "heavy" bird loads to be found.

12 and 20 gauge mainly plus some 16 gauge.
No .410 that I can find though.

Magnum Bob yeah it's that god damned bad.

I just walked through the Sioux Falls Scheels this morning and they were flush with shot shells. But it looked like the aisles were full of buyers also.

Lots of the Dakota Country shells at the Bismarck Runnings. They used to be made by Fiocchi but are made by a federal now.

And, its not only shot shells, and, I’m afraid we are not near the end of it.

If they are going as they say they are....24/7....then the the overflow will start to be seen. The .22lr shortage of a few years ago was the same scenario...when it broke they were selling 500 round buckets are decent prices.

I wass prepared, have enough ammo for this years sharptail hunting. But, the severe drought in eastern Montana combined with a June hailstorm that pounded over half of the farm I hunt mean few birds, and no birds of the year. Hail wiped em out. And it's so dry I am nervous about driving and shooting. The older shells with felt and paper wads especially make me nervous about a fire hazard.

I stopped by the Cabelas in Mitchell on my way through last night and they had ZERO 12 or 20 gauge shells except for 3.5 inch steel 12s. They had shelves full of Prairie Storm 16s and 28s if you were willing to pay $38 a box. Out of the normal bird hunting area in Wyoming I found some reasonably priced 16 gauge Fiocchi with a limit of 1 box of ammo per day. I picked a box up just in case my 16 gauge hunting partners run low. I have plenty for myself but who knows how long this will last.

Cabela's....$380. a case...Nothing like the we want to be your outdoor outfitter ripping off their customers to the extreme....Will be awhile before I forget that......

I planned on picking up some items there on the way to SD....I don't need them, that is Cabela's, to get what I need....

It’s interesting that Scheels in Sioux Falls was loaded,..but that was 48 hrs ago. I imagine as a bird-hunting destination entry point, they have some pull in the ammo distribution business.

As to cabelas, I was on their online site looking for something yesterday, and to say they are a shell of their former self is not an exaggeration.

My club is getting odds and ends more or less suitable for clays; 7 1/2 or 8 shot, some of it pretty “sporty” for shooting 50 rounds. $7-$10 a box. Not sure where it's coming from. Sales have been slow, so it’s available to buy for off-range use too. I have lots, so only buy for use there.

I was in Bob Ward's in Bozeman yesterday and they have no limit on boxes of 50 .22 lr for $9.40/box and cartons of 500 for $94.00. That's far from decent prices.

My gun club just rose the price on 12 and 20 gauge to $7 a box and $10 a box for 28 and .410s. This is directly a result of increased shipping costs.

Overall, this is one reason that I handload EVERYTHING. And I try to keep a good supply of all of the components that I use.

At one time I bought a K5 Blaser for $5500 and a 5 year old Vette with 6,000 miles on it for $5000. Around the same time I made 10x less than today.

First house was 135K…and the payment was $235 a month.
Apartments down the road are now $1200 a month.

Has the cost of shooting old Duga boy there changed?

Been fortunate enough to get about 9-10 boxes of 16ga pheasant loads over the last year. Got 240 rounds of 16 ga target off a guy for $40. That made it nice for getting acquainted with my new Ithaca 37 on 2 rounds of clays.

We have had 5 years of stable inflation....and that is most likely to change. It always does sooner or later. And inflation, rising wages for young workers and the cost of purchases not staying the same as they was a decade ago could care less about those of us getting old...Never has and never will...

As they say follow the money....Fall Bird hunting is big business in SD....
Of course some here think they should concentrate more on target ammo....even tho the competition target season winds down most places during winter.

I dusted off a 35 year old brick of Federal 209s (not 209A's) I inherited from my old man. Bought a Lee loader for $60. Did a lot of searching for powder.

I very unwisely gave up shotshell loading years ago and all my equipment and supplies went bye bye. For many, many years target ammo was so cheap it was a waste of time to load it. For a few boxes a year field ammo wasn't worth the time.

Lesson learned. Done relying on the whims of the market and manufacturers.
