BillyGoatGruff;
Good evening to you sir, I hope the day was a good one for you and yours and you're all doing well.

Since I'm done supper, have covered the tomatoes and peppers for the predicted frost tonight and have a wee bit of Pike Creek both in me and still left in a glass, I'll tell this one quickly.

My long time hunting partner is one of the rare folks who was both born and raised here in the south Okanagan and as such knows a few of the local ranching families, though perhaps not to the same degree as I do since I was on a branding crew for 27 odd years until the herd got sold.

Anyways, we still had horses and I had offered to take him on his first "horse hunt", so he accepted.

He liked to bug me about my cowboy hat on the best of days, saying something like you quoted to the effect that "real ranchers and cowboys wear ball caps".

We saddled up under the barn lights and headed onto the dark mountain, working our way up to where I thought some local mulies ought to be by that time of year.

From the darkness I heard, "Hold up a bit, cap came off" as he stopped to retrieve his ball cap that either a Ponderosa Pine or Saskatoon branch had knocked off.

About the 3rd time he did that, I reined in Carly the Appy, turned her around and trotted the couple yards back down the trail in the early dawn. Somehow Billy, I couldn't resist and the devil got the best of me as I leaned over and quietly said, "You know all the real cowboys wear ball caps...."

His reply was short and sweet and was more or less Good For You Dwayne.... laugh laugh

He shot a nice fat 2 point that morning in about a half hour and here I am packing the parts onto Carly the Appy for the walk back down the mountain.

The observant reader will note the Christmas sweater I'm sporting, but also there's no Kromer in the photo so I guess once again I'm off topic.

All the best to you all this season BillyGoat, here's to grand hunts regardless of headgear.

Dwayne

Dwayne as always you shame me with your prose. smile

I was stirring the pot more than anything. I’ve worn and seen worn plenty of felt hats that weren’t posers lol. Every thing has its place.

Yeah, well I'll put being the only straight guy under 50 in a class of nurses in the early 90's down on the list of really not gay things to experience.

Yeah, I get that it isn't North slope approved, but it rarely is below 0 degrees Fahrenheit when I'm rifle hunting.

This is for hunting with the Remington 81 😉

For hunting with that classic you really should have one of the old Filson models with the ear flaps that tied up over the top.

Kick myself mentally for not having bought one when we lived north of 60. As has been mentioned above probably the content of my cranium wasn’t that valuable anyway 🤔

The Lake of The Isles hats, kromer style, are very warm. Heavy wool, and the ear flaps hold your ears tight to your head. Only thing warmer I've worn is a mountie style hat.

Mostly 18-22, but there was one lady who was in her thirties that I should've paid tuition to. She taught me more than a lot of the teachers.....

I learn something new every day on here......Being from the South, I never had heard what the name of those caps were. I wear what they call a "jones" style hunting cap, but the Stormy Kromer cap never entered my world.
