Did the Model 99CD caliber in .308 come with a factory round front sight hood? This rifle does not have skip line checkering, and it does not have the gold medallion in the stock, or in the pistol grip cap. Born on date 1975.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, they did have a front sight hood in all the catalogs. Does yours have it, or grooves at the bottom edges of the sight for one to slip on?

Interesting it doesn’t have the medallion. Early CD before they did that?

1975 catalog does not show or mention a medallion.

Serial # starts with a B.....It has the white line spacers on the butt pad and the pistol grip cap. The butt pad is original and the sling studs would have the white line spacers as well?

Just to be sure.. there’s not a recess on the pistol grip cap where a medallion could fit? I’ve seen later 99’s where it came off.

I've had to replace a couple of the pistol grip cap medallions. They must come off pretty easy.

Help needed...

Numrich Arms has several hoods listed but I'm not sure what the CD uses. I think it has a knurled area around it and not sure if the slot is cut all the way or only part way. You need to search "Savage sight hood". There are several shown. If you go to the Savage CD section it just lists a full sight and Out of Stock.

I think all of the 99CD sights I've seen have looked like this.

Don't have a diameter, but bottom will be open all the way.

I had the correct sight hood saved in my parts list at Numrich but they revamped the application and dumped all of the saved lists. Lots of good info down the drain.

I'll see if I can find the CD again. Numrich is not a search friendly site. But hey! maybe the new app will be wonderful...

I once owned a CD and found a hood for the front sight. It is a Williams sight. I did an internet search. I think the two following are what you want:

https://oldarmsofidaho.com/product/williams-streamlined-sight-ramp-hood-cover-slide-on-used/

https://www.gunauction.com/buy/17112370

At those prices you aren't out much if it doesn't fit.

I thought I had one or two of the WIlliams type hoods with the connected front but I could not find one, I was always wondering what they were for. I did find a couple similar that are not connected at the front. I did a search trying to find out what these two might be for. I couldn't find detailed enough pictures to be sure but I've come to the conclusion that the one that is open full length might be the correct one for at least some CD's.

Looking at the picture above ramp with out the hood it looks like there is an indentation in the groove which would be needed for the hood with the open groove. That hood also opens up wider at the rear which would allow it to slip past the rear end of the grooves and I found a couple pictures that appear to show hoods that fit like that without protruding over the front of the ramp and even at the rear.

Could they have used different hoods at different times? The one on the left is ~0.690"~OD x 0.985" long and the other is ~0.642"~OD x 1.000" long.

ADDED - as I was putting these back where I probably won't be able to find them again, I noticed the one with the tabs appears to have been split, the ends are rough and do not appear blued, so it's probabaly a modified Williams.

I’m ~99% sure that the hood I got for my CD had the indent.

I would not have thought we would have so much trouble determining the hood for a CD. Thank you, Savage, for keeping it interesting. laugh

Ive got a hooded front sight on an A saddle gun from 1977, its not knurled on one end, it is open all the way through and has wider spot that must fit in the indent in ramp.

1978 99CD hood on the barrel:
Outer diameter 0.825"
Length: 1.05"
Straight slot on bottom but not open all the way - has a crosspiece at the textured end approx. 0.16"
Textured portion of length is 0.33" long

1980 99-375 Brush Gun hood off the barrel:
Outer diameter 0.715"
Length 0.998"
Straight open slot on the bottom all the way that's 0.25" wide
Textured portion of length is 0.325" long

Except for this 99CD having a hood with a crosspiece at the end, I think the two hoods have identical specs. Differences in measurements are just from the 99-375 being off the barrel, that sucker was a pain to put back on so I didn't take the 99CD off. The gap of 0.25" on the bottom of the 99-375 hood is not as wide as the sight base, I had to pry it open farther to get the hood to slide back on.

So apparently they used different hoods. Both rifles are NIB.

I found one I think is the same - gunpartscorp/products/967850a Looks just like the Williams.
Here's another listed as Savage - gunpartscorp/products/981010 This one appears to have a very small tab on one side in the front.

I think ones that are not connected at the front would be easier to slip off if they were bumped or caught on something.
