I am thinking of buying/building a new hunting rifle- probably next year. I want a bolt action preferably with a 22 inch barrel and weighing 8lbs or less with scope and fully loaded.I am looking a caliber that will handle 180-220 grain ammo and I will limit my shot to 400 yards on game-elk and/or moose..
I am thinking of perhaps a 338-06 or a 338 RCM. I had a Kimber 338 WM but the length of pull was a bit long for me and the barrel was a bit long as well. I could not bring myself to cut the rifle though so I sold it.
I don't want a muzzle break and the 338 Wm was about as much recoil as I want-less would be better. I don't currently reload but I have the equipment to do so if it helps.
Looking for suggestions.
Thanks!

NULA. 30-06
Or a Montana.
300win. if you want kicked harder. But you didn't like the 338.
Forget the 220. 200 grain Partition Lighter Barnes.
You aren't asking much of the rifle. Pretty easy to get up to your needs.

You described the 30-06 pretty much to a T. Not reloading will limit your choices beyond that, especially these days.

If Montana had a standing army, a 270 Win with Federal Blue Box 130's would be the standard issue.

.30/06 is a slam dunk. Gazillions to choose from from, already built. Find a nice FN or similar, throw on a quality synthetic stock, and you’re all set.
What fresh Hell is this?

30-06 fills your description well. The other option is 338-06 except you will most likely need to reload as commercial ammo is slim.

I would not want a muzzle break either..... Muzzle brakes suck. Even more so on a hunting rifle.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Or Forbes, Fieldcraft, or Colt Light Rifle in 30-06. Though some on the fire shoot the 308 with heavy bullets very well.

M70 fwt would be fine, too. In (yet again) the boring old .30/06. It just keeps on getting the job done.

30-06 and lots of factory rifles fit your needs..... save the money of a custom build unless you want some unique feature
