Whistlepig bit all the way through Nyx's bottom jaw and took a chunk out of Brodie's nose. Geno Jr. said he heard something screaming bloody murder in the yard and he goes out to see and there's Nyx dragging and shaking the thing with Brodie stuck on the end by the nose doing all the squalling. They dug it up out of it's hole. It had Brodie by the nose and Nyx had it by the rear all over the back yard. Looks like a murder scene.

Geno Jr. is not amused. Now he has to doctor and bathe both of them.

A friend once opined that if your dog comes home bit up by a groundhog, the groundhog is dead. Or you dog would be if it had not prevailed.

When we lived in SW Michigan, there was one that lived in a field out past our back fence. That groundhog would sit up about 25 yards out and torment our beagle. Then, one day, somehow, the beagle caught the hog in the back corner of our yard. A lot of noise followed. The beagle had enough sense to not directly attack, but just held him there until I could come out and flop a cardboard box over the hog and dump him over the back fence again. Hog never teased the beagle again.

When I was a kid, our neighbors’ dachshund caught a squirrel and came away with a one inch slit in his ear. I happened to see the last few seconds of the fight and all I could see was a dachshund whipping his head all around and the squirrel trying to hang on to that ear. When it ripped through the ear the squirrel made it up a nearby tree and was giving that dog hell. 🐿

Geno,

It's surprising how much a couple of teeth sunk down to the bone hurts.
Lol

He earned half of that good groundhog meat to chow down on for dinner. If you haven't ever tried it, it's not bad if you skin it fresh and fry it in bacon fat.

I had never heard of anyone eating them but I've had several people say they were good. I threw it in the freezer.

Had a big chuck at end of our addition.
Ol Baron the german shepherd of the neighbors came home, face chest, whole front half of him soaked in blood.

Looked horrible.

Cleaned up he had about a half dozen or more groundhog chomps on his head.

Our guess he went right in and DGAF.....chewed that chuck through the middle while taking some hits.

He was a proud puppy for a while LOL

You're welcome slumlord.

Mine are at both ends of the spectrum. Nyx the warrior princess is three legging it and can't eat and all proud as can be - no complaining whatsoever. Brodie the lover is wishing he hadn't helped her and crying about his war wound every few minutes.

Good call. I have one that likes to visit now and then that will get the same treatment in the next couple of weeks.
Nice looking dogs.

The problem when those incisors grab is that the dog (or man)
instinctively jerks back, which drives those teeth deeper.
Then they try to shake it off and they are flinging all of that weight back and forth to get it off, which sinks the teeth until they hit bone or the uppers meet the lowers.
I never got grabbed by any groundhogs hard enough, but once was surprised by an old male prairie dog. That was pretty painful. He was getting grumpier in his old age.

Brindle dog!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

My dogs cookie ( brindle) and Sweetheart ( husky mix)got a ground hog in the backyard years ago

Cookie got tore up by it too.
But he didnt care either.
Just pizzed him off for more.
Had ta get him away from the thing and in the house.

They snapped its lower spine by the time I got the dogs off it.

Put 2 Velocitors thru its noggin.
Neighbors all tweaking out from the cujo dogs going after it.
Then all boo boo face when I shot it.

Threw it in the woods across the fenceline.

Was pretty surprised how much fight that groundhog had in it around those dogs.

Round here we have Rock Chucks (Yellow Bellied Marmot). I had a dog that was so fast she could grab one and with one quick shake it'd be all over, she never got a mark on her and the Chuck didn't even have time to squeak. Once I was walking with her down the sidewalk in our developement, I looked down at her and she was just walking alongside me with an 8 pound Chuck in her mouth, I never heard a sound, I'm not sure she even broke her stride.
