I killed a Groundhog today and thought it was a very large one , I have killed some big ones and guessed their weight to be 15 to 20 lbs .. this one was a huge one so I finally weighed it, and to my surprise it only weighed 7 1/2 Lbs.... I am getting weaker as I get older and everything seems to be very heavy now,,, so if you kill a big Groundhog weigh it and let me know its weight... I am just curious of their weights... thanks all ....

I’m sure if you always used a scale you’d find that you killed a lot of 7.5lb groundhogs.

Like has been said about most critters:

The heaviest ones are the furthest from a scale.

Do Indians use scales?

He became dehydrated between the time you shot it and then got it to the scale. 😊

A local sportsmans club holds an annual woodchuck hunt. Prizes awarded for most chucks taken and heaviest taken. The heaviest usually comes in at 10 - 13 pounds.

A Pennsylvanian’s groundhog stories seem to be on par with their deer stories.

LOL

According to google, average weight is listed as 13 lbs.

The heaviest I've seen was 23.5 pounds & I wouldn't have seen that if I hadn't been in a contest for the biggest hog killed that day. Otherwise I've not weighed others.

Around here ( Indiana ) an adult ( over a yr old ) will fatten up and go 12-14 lbs before taking the winter nap.

A big one will go a couple.lbs over.
My largest one put to a scale was 16 and that was late summer. Proly woulda hit 20# by fall.

I did shoot one while squirrel hunting once, that proly hit 20 or more. No scale though.

Have seen pics of some monsters in PA that scaled over 30. They dont look right ( old Varmint Hunters Assoc magazine ). Freaks.

IMHO a 13.lb groundhog is just a normal one a couple yrs old ready for the long nap.

Nothing to get excited about

They do look super cool right now, like mini grizzly bears.
Id like to.find a whopper and take it w rimfire and have a full mount done.

70gr Nosler BT from .243 is too brutal.

Have a good one close to home but inside city limits.
Maybe I should ask the mayor if I can bowhunt em next yr.

I've never weighed one but have shot some over the years that I'm sure would have been over 15 lbs.. The chuck hunting contest I referenced in my previous post is held in the spring every year. If it was in August or Sept. the weights would be higher.

IMHO 16-20 lbs around here is a brute, and not common.
Most will go under 16 even now.

There is one living under a house down the road and he was a bigger than avg pig 2 yrs ago.

Grey as all getout. Hes fun to spot.

Dunno who lives there, car in drive, mowed....theyre cool w him so what the heck. His buddy got run over a month or two back. Thought that one was not him, too small.

Then later i saw the fuzzball chompin by the flowerbed.
Head down and goin to town.

Not the same quite but I killed a Rockchuck that weighed 22.5 pounds on the scale.

Looked like a grizzly cub.
