Thanks Sheister. I put a couple of coats of finish on it since posting. Sanded it down with 400 grit in between, with a final , light, rub down with 0000 steel wool to dull the finish slightly. Additional coats and sanding did help fill in pores and give the stock a nicer finish. I am totally satisfied, and as you say, anyone that doesn't care for it is welcome to do the repair themselves. I had nothing to lose by attempting the repair myself, other than the cost of a reproduction stock.
