I have a Kimber Mountain Ascent in 7mm-08 and I have a Meo Star R2 1.7-10x42 and I have Swarovski Habict 2.5-10x42. Which one would you go with? Do you think they are too heavy for that rifle?

I have a Kimberly Classic Select with a 2.5X10X42 S&B Summitt on. Works perfectly for me

If hunting Pa is anything like NY. I'd find a Leupold 3 x 9 x 33 compact for that lightweight Kimber. My 700 mountain and both model 7's wears them

I’m thinking the two scopes with their lower magnification will work good for my area and the 10x would be a bonus. However, does the extra weight of those scopes make no sense for that rifle. I have a couple light weight Leupolds but was looking to put them on the model 70’s.

Until recently, I had a VX-5HD 2-10 on my Fieldcraft. Total weight with Talleys was IIRC 6lbs 7oz. I removed it to send it in to have the fuzzy etched reticle replaced. Ordered a Tract 3-15 (20oz, 3oz heavier) and mounted it on a rail with Warne Mountain Tech rings. Took it way over 7lbs and ruined the excellent handling and fit. Yesterday I pulled it and replaced it with a Trijicon 3-9 in another set of Talleys. Now it weighs 6lbs 3.6 oz and the perfect cheek-weld is back and the rifle handles perfectly again. It ain’t all about weight. Mounting a scope higher, especially a heavier one, make the rifle more likely to twist to the side in your hands. Sounds trivial, but the effect is very real with a rifle meant to be fired quickly from less than perfect positions.

I think it is purely a personal preference answer. I do not have the lighter weight Mountain Ascent in the smaller action.
But, I do have a Kimber Montana in 325 WSM with a Swarovski 1.7-10x42. I like it, for my uses no complaints. I have another of the same rifle and cartridge with a Zeiss Victory 1.5x6x42. No complaints with it either.

Like what was said previously, it's not just the amount of weight on a very light rifle, it's where that weight is. If it's at the extreme end of a rifle or up very high, it stuffs up the handling and balance of the rifle more so than on a heavier rifle.

Either of those two would let you really see in that early morning, late night and in brushy terrain. I don’t sweat the weight of optics within reason. They gotta do what you want first before I worry about the weight of them.

Of the two mentioned by the OP, I'd take the Meopta R2. I love Swaro binos, not so much their scopes but maybe it's just me. You're giving up nothing to the Swaro with that R2.

I'll only partially answer this question with an opinion. If had a a "heavier" scope that I liked and wanted to use AND wanted a lighter overall package to carry, I can't think of a better way to accomplish that than to put the "heavier" scope on a lighter weight rifle.

I'd go with a 2x7 or 2.5x8. About as light and compact as practical with plenty of magnification.

Just today I replaced the vx3 on my long action fieldcraft with a nf shv 3-10.
Went from 6 lbs 8 to 7 2.
Really can’t tell any difference just holding the rifle.
Mounted in Talley Lows. Eye relief is not a problem and could actually have mounted it a little farther forward than it is.
I wouldn’t be concerned with mounting a 20 oz scope on a light rifle

I wouldn’t either, except for the other issues I mentioned. I could have just mounted the Tract in the Talleys and come in at about 6-11, but had the Trijicon in hand, and another good use for the Tract. The new weight is the lightest my FC has been, and it feels just right.

The duplex in the Trijicon is just about perfect. i had no trouble quartering a 1” target with the center section, and even with me under a covered bench, I could see the little green dot. Under an open sky, it’s very clear and “clean”.

I’m going to try the Meopta in a set of low Talleys and see if I like it. Hoping the low mount will make the rifle feel balanced.

Yep. I put a Leupold 2.5 X 8 in my Kimber Adirondack.

Hard to beat.

With the Meopta R1 I have I doubt much can beat the R2 for glass
I would think the R2 must be pretty awesome

If of course it's a good fit on that rifle

Ken, how heavy are those scopes? I wouldn't think the Swaro is very heavy. I just run 13 OZ Burris FFII 3-9x40's on most of my hunting rifles. They work just fine, so I'm sure your rifle scopes are much better optically, just don't know their weights. I'm sure either would work just fine though and they have excellent glass. Pick one and let us know how it works out for you..
