I am looking for a 22lr to get my 9 year old into. I only have a semi auto in a 22 and do not want to use it for safety reasons. I am looking for the best single shot or lever action at a decent price. I am leaning toward the Marlin lever, but am looking for advice. I want something that will be reliable, accurate and a good beginner gun. Thanks

Marlin 15Y is a youth model single shot.
Savage has a new one with a peep sight for about $129.00.
Remington is selling the Zastava, but marking it up $100 over what Zastava was charging. Go search for the Zastava, but Dick's had the Remmie on sale for $149.00. This is a really slender little rifle. Really nice.
CZ makes a youth carbine version of their 427. Also nice.

The Savage Mark II series are good and, at Dick's, pretty inexpensive. The local Dick's had a Savage Mark II for $99.98 the last time that I looked.

I bought a Savage Stevens "favorite" falling block single shot for my grandson to learn with. It's a light little gun, and I had the stock cut down for little shooters. With the exposed hammer, these are pretty safe guns. Virgil B.

I know you didn't ask about bolt guns, but I ask you to highly consider a CZ 452 bolt gun. The things are built solid, nice walnut stock, and accurate as all get out. Get it for your 9 year old and he'll have it when he is 79. I bought one for my left handed girlfriend, the only thing wrong with it is its left handed, now I gotta get one for myself with the bolt on the correct side.

I have a BL22 that I love. But I purchased a Henry Lever in 22 short and LR. for just a beater/truck rifle. Its a sweet little plinker.

IMHO, get either the CZ452 or the Marlin 39A.
Either one will teach a kid right, they will never out grow it, and it's damned fine rifle; best of their breed, imho, as far as modern bolt and lever guns go.
Anything else is shorting the kid in the long run.

I agree with VA ... but substitute 77/22 for the CZ. Never shot a CZ but have no doubt it will be around for awhile ... I just like the Rugers.

Can't dislike the Ruger. I just like the CZ. Either one, would be just fine.

I'd have to add to the recommendations for the CZ 452 (even though it has a magazine, it is easy to just load one round).
I've had one for over 30 years and it has shot over 70,000 shots (I used it in Sporting Rifle competition when I was doing a serious amount of shooting).
The rifle is still extremely accurate and I've never had to repair anything. In fact, it replaced an Anschutz rifle because the CZ was more accurate (and with more brands of ammo to boot).
As I understand it, this model has been produced without changes (except stock shape) since just after WW II. There is a reason for this long production and its great reputation all around the world.

John I could not agree with you more, about the CZ 452 rifles in any flavor... The only caveat I would add is that I prefer the American styled stock to the European style stock. If I remember correctly, (And I sometimes do not) there is a single shot adapter available for the CZ 22 rifles... With all of the above being said. I still like the Marlin 39's, the Winchester 9422's, the Browning 22 automatics and the Ruger 10/22's for when a new shooter has progressed from neophyte, to competant... Bill

Thanks for the advice. I had not even thought about the CZ's. I will get on their site and check out the 22s.

When my Son was 6 I wanted to buy him his first 22. I wanted his first rifle to be a like an old winchester model 63, 52 so as it aged the rifle would have character.
I choice the T/C 22 classic..he is now 10 and shooting it to death. My fingers are sore from loading magazines for him.

I bought my son a CZ Scout when he was 7. He is now 12 and likes my Remington 541 with Burris 3-9x40 Mini Compact scope. He wants his own full size CZ 453 American. He will probably get it for his 8th grade graduation. My 9 year old daughter now uses the CZ Scout. I say go with a CZ 452/453 or a Ruger 77/22.

Can't really go wrong with an old Winchester 67, single shot, bolt action. Lots of nice levers out there too though.

I learned on a 9422, If you can find one of those snatch it up. Very accurate an dependable. One summer vacation I went through my dads 22 ammo stash it was around 25,000 rounds I shot them all with out it being cleaned once. Not one mis fire or jam.
My ex had a henery 22. For a truck gun I can understand it. But I wont own one. Plastic front sight, and the action feels like plastic to me.
The marlin 39a is also one heck of a .22

Tell him to keep his finger off the trigger at port arms.
A government is the most dangerous threat to mans rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims.
