I’ve got a 700 SA with a standard sporter contour bbl. It’s got 1” Talley LW low height rings on there now and they are Cerakoted to match the rest of the gun so I don’t really want to swap them out. I’d like to change the 3-9x 40mm scope on there now to one with more power. Looking at the Swaro Z5 2-12x50. Anyone know if I can get a 50mm objectives on low Talley LW Rings?

How much room is between the barrel and the scope now with the 40mm scope?

This doesn’t answer your question, but might give you some perspective. I had a 700 sa standard sporter. I put a Z3 42mm in extra lows talleys with the reversible front. It was extremely tight on the barrel and bolt cycle but no contact. No room for butler creeks or factory bikini cover. I used a neoprene cover. I thought it was a great little set up.

Yeah, some of the big eye pieces some scopes wear these days can cause more problems than larger objectives.

Digital calibers are handy & cost less all the time. Ya can't get those into tight places to measure gaps, but coins are good for this. Dimes, nickels, etc. are all different thicknesses. Stack em to fill the gap, then measure the stack.
A feeler gauge from the auto parts store is a cheap & handy tool in the gun room.

Oh, just thought that going from a 40mm obj. to a 50mm obj. is a simple need of an extra .197"+ of clearance. But only if staying with same brand & style. So, you must know the actual O.D. of thee obj. of each scope, not just the change in lens diameter when changing brands or models.

OK, I just measured.

Rem. 700 S.A. sporter, Talley lows, & a 4-12x40 Leupold w/non-adjustable objective.

Two dimes & 1 nickel, approx. .180" gap.

So, same brand & model of scope with a 50 will not clear. Others? not likely.

Thanks. Yes I know I could measure, but the different brand thing matters. The 40 vs 50mm is just the lens right? I need to know the actual OD. Guess I need to do more research. Anyone got that Swaro Z5? Give me an actual measurement?

As DR Brown mentioned, the clearance for the bolt handle can be a issue--especially with the larger oculars these days. I don't see a 50mm clearing the bbl either.
