I'm still in the early stages, but I am in the process of putting together either a bolt or single shot (Encore) in .338 Federal. I've ordered several hundred 185gr bonded and 225gr PTSP bullets, and the plan is to simply resize .308 brass to load. I have quite a few different powders to use, including Varget, IMR 8208, IMR 4064, LEVERevolution, H335 (WC 844), Ramshot TAC, and H4895 (as well as others).

Anyone loading for the .338 Federal?

I liked 8208 and the 160 TTSX. Lots of other good choices though.

I enjoy handguns and I really like shotguns,...but I love rifles!

I've had some promising results with 215 GRN. Game kings and LEVERevolution, close to 2700 fps and nice accuracy as well.

For those interested, Midway has dropped the price of the 185gr bonded bullets to $27/box....they are actually $2 cheaper/box then when I ordered them last week.

I started with the round when it was known as the 338-08. Load data was passed down by the gunsmith who did the re-barreling work. There was one load that was recommended to start: 44 gr RL15 with a 200 gr Nosler BT. I've only used .308 brass run through a full length resizing die. No issues with case life. Accuracy has always been excellent with this load. It is more of a starting load but since it has been so accurate I usually just stick with it. Tried Alliant 2000 MR also. Higher velocity but less accuracy. Newer powders like TAC and 8208 are supposed to be better yet.

Have fun. It really works on big game at normal hunting distances.

I got a good deal on a like new Stainless Synthetic Sako 85 338 Federal in 2008 off Gun Broker. Have harvested maybe 10 whitetail deer with it. The 185 TSX/TTSX with 8208 is really good combo. The 160 TTSX and 8208 is good as well AA2230 is really accurate with both bullets as well. Leverlution and a 210 Swift Sirocco or NPT is more than adequate. All my research indicates the 225 is to much bullet. You'll probably find the 210 is a better choice.

Good luck and shoot straight y'all

8208 xbr has been my go to powder in the 338 federal. I've gotten great results with 160, 180, 185, & 200 grain bullets.
