Saw it in Varmint Hunters magazine...... speed read most of it at the Supermarket stand.... I don't care how good an article might be, with an asking price of $9 for a magazine, I'll pass.... ( yeah I know, cheap comes to mind don't it?)...

The article was interesting, forget who the author was..... but after just doing a 17 Fireball, I might think about doing a 17/222 next on the list.
They were only testing 3 component powders and like 3 bullets... 20 VMax, 25 HP/Hornady and the 35 gr Berger....

Struck me as fun in a sage rat pasture..... finally got my 17 Fireball stuff, just haven't put it together since its been deer season...
but that is now over so I am going to have to put it together.

Didn’t see the article. I have a 17FB and a couple 17 Rem. Not likely that I will split the difference and have a 17/222 built.

If I was building a 17 again I think I’d build a 17/222 simply to stay in keeping with my 222 theme. 222, 6mmx222, 25/222, Would like to build a 20/222 if I can find another reasonably priced left handed mini Mauser.

Deer season just ended yesterday Roy!

Today I spent most of my time in the rain, cleaning up the yard since it is knee deep in leaves, and I've got mushrooms growing all over the place.

and the wife is bitchin about it..... of course she had to work at the hospital again today....like 30 hours a week overtime right now.

Dang, that is a lot of overtime. I'll bet she's wore flat out. I couldn't do it anymore, but she's probably younger than I am.

The 17/222 is a fairly efficient round in the world of 17's I hear, but I'm still more of a "muscle car" guy, so if I was building it would be a 17-204. But I have to admit, I'm very satisfied with the 17 Rem.
Is 222 brass hard to find?

What magazine did you see it in? I did not know there was a "Varmint Hunters" magazine now.

I’ve managed to round up a lot of 222 brass but I’ve been shooting 222s and it’s progeny for many years. Had my first 222 35 years ago. Had one or more in the gathering ever since. Until just recently. I sold my 40x a couple months ago but still have a 6mmx222 and PacNor is finishing up my 25-222 right now. They sent it out for cerakoting last week. I have one remaining left handed mini Mauser that I’ll have them barrel to 222.

I had PacNor built a left handed 17 Remington several years ago on a mini Mauser. As intriguing as a 17-222 might be it would be so close in performance to the 17 Remington it would be pretty much duplicating what I already have.

Tnman: I'll second your request to Seafire - I thought the Varmint Hunters magazine was defunct.
There is a "Predator Hunters (Masters?) magazine I see from time to time of recent.
And welcome to you to the CampFire.

It was Varmint Something, Maybe Varmint Rifles.... either way, I wasn't paying attention, that close.

Funny you mentioned this. Just acquired a 17-222 reamer and haven't had a chance to look into it.

I just put a 17 Fireball Barrel from Douglas on a Savage Axxis 2, I picked up on Walmart close out.

Was thinking about doing another barrel in the 17/ 222....

Will have to work out the Load die issue first....

thoughts are necking down 223 brass to 222...

then do a neck down to 20 and then 17 cal...

thinking I am going to finally have to learn about neck turning if I did that route...

I get all that logistical stuff worked out BEFORE ordering a barrel.....

Thinking an 18.5 inch heavy magnum contour barrel like I did on the 17 Fireball.... which was actually just copying the barrel that came on the Axxis in 350 Legend.

Had a 17 Javalina decades ago. Lot of fun, but I think a straight 17/222 would be absolutely just as good and a whole lot simpler to form without any loss in performance. Terry

I had a 17-222 I had built on a Sako A-1 action with a Douglas barrel back in the 1980's. Really loved shooting that rifle but someone who worked for me stole it from my house with a bunch of my guns and gear.

My friend had a 17 Ackley Bee that got me started in the .17 world back in the mid 1970's.
