The son in the red flannel heavily favors dad, that's for sure.

Not all that many wild quail left in TX nowadays. The population has suffered quite a bit due to fire ants and feral hogs. Throw in habitat destruction and it’s pretty dismal.

You’d need some good dogs and lots of acreage to get that many on a morning hunt. Especially in the TX Hill Country.

The weather cooperated nicely, right between fronts.

Actually this picture says it's about the birds. I have nothing against put-take(I've even done it myself more than once) but I was curious if Ed's extensive wealth got him shooting wild birds in the hill country which is a real rarity these days.

In 2015 I saw more than a few coveys around Mason which was a real surprise so there's still some birds hanging on. I was really curious if Ed's opulent lifestyle afforded him to hunt these diamonds and what management practices the 80 year old landowner utilized to bring about such a stunning hunt but it appears he's in the same boat as the rest of us.

I agree that fire ants, feral hogs, increased predators, exotic flora, and modern land practices have decimated Bobwhites throughout much of the country. Bobwhites are definitely not a success story.

There was a few on the Blanco county place about 5 years ago. Don’t have a clue where they came from. They showed up on the deer hunters game cams and around the old ranch house. But haven’t seen of heard any in a while.

Rarely see a bobwhite here on the Ranch anymore. And haven’t seen a Blue or Scaled Quail in years.

When I was a kid in the 60’s & 70’s, I could easily limit out without a dog.

The only Quail Hunters with any success around here nowadays typically lease 10 to 20 Thousand acres.

The pay to hunt pen raised places do well. They are expensive to hunt though.

That's interesting. I wondered if the 2011 drought killed off a good number of quail predators and competitors which allowed them to return if only briefly.

Quail are maybe my favorite thing to hunt. We are lucky to have some decent populations in WA. Little bastards can be hoot.
