OKAY BOYS - Here goes.
I need recommendations as to what power variable scope I should put on top of a custom built 243 that is a nail driver.I will mostly be using this rifle to shoot prarie dogs and an occasional coyote or fox, whatever comes to the call. I will probably be taking some long shots since this rifle is very capable and a very straight shooter.
So, what powers do you guys recommend?
LIVE WELL,LAUGH OFTEN AND HUNT ALL YOU CAN!
WHAMP

I would put a Leupold 6.5 X 20 Vari X III on that rig if it were mine. Since you said you were planning on using it for prairie dogs I assume it has a varmint weight barrel.

I suggest a Burris 4.5-14 Full field II. Low enough power for preditor hunting and plenty of magnification for long shots on PD's.
My .02
Paul

I like my 6X18 redfield and I would use that. If I was gonna buy one that Luis 6.5X20 sounded good. I might look into a 4X12, that way the 4x can be used for close shots quickly, 6x is still a bit much under 50 yds on dogs.

Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

How much cash are you looking to spend ?
If you have $500.00 to $600.00 to spend by all means get a Leupold Vari III . If you are willing to spend big bucks you can get a schmidt & Bender 4-16x50 with 8$ varmint dot for about $1300.00 . But most of us don't have that kind of cash . If you are in a little lower tax bracket "like me" , but you still wanted a good scope you could try a Weaver grand slam "I got my 6-20x40 grand slam for $320.00 , and some change" . There is also the Simmons Aetec (about 150.00) or Nikon Monarch (any ware from $250.00 to $400.00) .
Just some ideas .
Regards: treeratkiller
Leupold 4.5-14x. That will give you a good hand, regarding short range affairs. The high end, will easily get you to 1000yds. 50mm,would be nice, but in lowlight you can turn the power down, and get by with the 40mm. The 50mm,is much brighter, and would be my choice.........

I'm very happy with the performance of my Weaver V-24. It's a 6-to-24 power variable. Very sharp. Plus, Weaver and Leupold and the other top makers offer first rate service and replacement guarentees. One warning. If portability is an issue, the V-24 is big and heavy.
Talker

This is to easy. Put a 6 to 24 X 50 Swarovski on it. A lot of the varmint hunting around here is done an hour or two before it gets dark. Try this test: look towards (not directly at) the sun as it is setting. Most of the time you will see all sorts of pretty "prizm" shapes in the scope, instead of the varmint. I have never seen those shapes in the Swarovski 6 to 24 X 50 scope but have seen it in other lessor scopes.
You have a custom rifle, do it and yourself justice and put a high quality scope on it.
Nuke them varmints [Linked Image]
Don [Linked Image]

I prefer the 4X14 Burris FC with the adjustable AO feature. The adjustable AO feature allows you to focus on close shots at any power setting. All my scopes are equipped the AO feature for that reason. Any scope without the AO feature will not allow close range shooting at 25 yards or less.

I've got a Weaver V-16 that I picked up from SWFA for $220 about 2 years ago...

4X16

It's "not" too heavy....

And though I've got a bunch of pricey scopes sitting around,
My V-16 gets the most use.
I think it's a best buy anytime.

Choosing a scope is like choosing a wife. If you make a mistake the results are unpleasant. I suggest reading the information on this site before continuing.

I'm with prairie dog shooter! a 6.5 x 20 x 40 Leupold rests on my 2 early rem .243's. I like the dot not the duplex, and a 50mm raises scope up such that I have to raise my head high and don't shoot as well.

I tried some of those long range high power scopes once, but the thing is once you fired the 2nd or 3rd shot with the sun out, the mirage off the barrel had me turning the scopes back down to 6 power. So I just stick with the 4 x 12 power on scopes, and in most cases on groundhogs a 3 x 9 works just as well.

There are so many good varmintscopes available so the choice is legio. Of course I think my bird is the best so I would go for it - the B&L 6-24x40 and the varmints, from coyotes down wont have a chance.
