LGS has SN E977972 with synthetic stock, Burris scope and Harris bipod for $475. I haven' bore scoped it. The only new gun in town is a Howa for $600 that probably exceeds my budget. I did find some ammo. Should I pull the trigger?

Is this a Savage 110, I'm guessing?

It's not just for 99's, it's for collector Savage guns/advertising/memorabilia/etc.

A 1989 Savage 110 doesn't really fall into the collectible arena yet, though, so not sure how much expertise you'll find here. I do have to say that given it's has a synthetic stock and usable scope, $475 doesn't seem like a bad deal for a hunting rifle as long as the stock fits well.

Thank you for your reply. From it I'm guessing that you have the ability to look up the SN? I was frustrated in my attempts to do so online. Is there anything else you can tell me about the gun (twist rate, etc.)? It seems the design hasn't changed much over the years, but I was warned that Savage may have cut corners around this time due to bankruptcy proceedings. I don't know much about the pre Accu-Trigger rifles.

My biggest concern is bore condition, as I have heard this caliber can be hard on rifling. I will try to ascertain it and go from there. Will probably buy it if it's decent given limited options. Thanks again and good luck. I hunt NE every year.

Yeah.. around 1987'ish Savage went into bankruptcy. Ron Coburn came in and turned the company around, they pretty much stopped production of everything except the 110 and model 24. The 99 was still listed in the catalog, but large parts were being made by Llama in Spain and they were assembled in Spain. Very few 99's sold. And yeah, both David and my books have the serial number ranges for those years. You can search it online at www.savagelevers.com - I have a serial number lookup page that will do serial numbers starting with a letter up to 2002.

Let's see.. the synthetic stock version was the 110F. Stock dropped 1 5/8" at the comb, and 2 1/4" at the heel. Weighed 6.75 pounds, held 5 rounds, free floating barrel, black DuPont Rynite stock.. normal twist rate for 22-250 in Savage 110's was 1-14".

Pretty much all I've got. grin
