My 89 year old uncle just gave me a bunch of 16 gauge shotgun shells and boxes. Several of the boxes seem quite old ie. paper hulls, advertising the new crimp on the shot shell etc. Boxes and shells seem in good condition.
So my question is, is there any money in old shells and boxes or do I just shoot the shells when I take his Remington model 11 to the woods.
Thanks,
DR

In my past experience, I would use the shells and keep the boxes
There are a lot more ½" rifles than ½" shooters.

My first thought was to see if you can trade them in on newer ammo just to remove any doubts, or try to sell them to collectors and buy new ammo. But first I would check the availability of new ammo given the current shortages

Depending on the boxes they may have some collector value and even more if they are full of unfired shells. I’d check into that first.
They buy some modern 16ga ammo and use the shotgun.

Nothing like the smell of burnt gun powder from a freshly shot paper hull. That being said, you might check out this website or do a google search for others. https://www.gunauction.com/shop/collectible-ammo-for-sale/shotshellsPS. My Browning Sweet Sixteen loves them.

Shotgun shells are heavy and a pain in the ass to ship, those costs alone make swapping kind of difficult, sell to a collector who would be willing to spend the dollars to receive, or shoot them yourself. I've blasted away with paper hulled shells that were in rough shape and they worked fine, stuff came out of the end of the barrel and flew the direction of aim, just like a modern plastic hulled shell.

Use your instinct/tuition, if something doesn’t seem right about them, don’t shoot them. You must have some doubt or you wouldn’t be asking, but does make interesting conversation.

I'm guessing that he may not want to shoot up something that could be worth a lot of money. A collector beer can is usually worth more if it's unopened.

I sure miss the old Federal paper target loads! I shot thousand on the trap and skeet fields. I found uot you could reload them once and I did. We all though theyt were softer recoiling.

I came across a few boxes of paper hulls a couple years back that belonged to my dad who had died the year before. I just posted a will ship for postage ad and they were spoken for in about 90 seconds.
Probably should have put a price on em.......
Seems like I saw some other a couple months back whilst digging thru some old boxes of dad's.
