I'd like to do a Maine grouse hunt next fall. I would like to stay in the W-NW part of the state. Any suggested areas to try? Not looking for hot spots but something I could do myself. Thanks!

I’ve not been personally myself yet but my coworker would always hunt up in the Allagash region of Maine on the old logging roads and was successful every year.

Why didn't you want to go back?

It is my very sad duty to report that the Allagash was very heavally cut over.
Get a Maine Gazetter, I suggest the areas West and southwest of Oxbow.

Entrance through the Allagash gate, will make any sportsmen weep.

I was hoping to hunt in the area between the NH border and HWY 201. I will check out the Maine hunting publications. Thanks for the replys.

I love to PM you but it seems like you have to have a trillion post for that to happen. I'll keep trying though

I appreciate you trying. I guess the "over your PM" limit this is invoked for new members until they get enough posts. I can't pm you because it tells me I don't have enough posts. Maybe someone will straighten it out after the holiday weekend. Happy New Year!

Keep on posting. Time will fly by. PM's will open up.

I am very interested in this too. I have a 6 month-old puppy that I will hopefully have ready for a late October trip to Maine. I have hunted Vermont a lot but want to try the Maine North Woods. I gather that you can pay to enter the north woods area and there are campsites inside. I will most-likely be camping.

CNYMUZGUY: I see you are in Oswego. That seems like you should have access to some pretty good hunting. I have fished up there and will probably be going again in February. I am going to start researching Maine and I will let you know what I find out. Are you looking to stay with an outfitter or are you planning to camp?

Camping inside the North Maine Woods gates is a great way to go about it. We've been using just popup tents, but this year I'm going to buy a wall tent before October. It can get down in the teens at night up north in October. A tent with a stove wouldn't be a bad idea.

I'm happy to point folks in the right direction if they would like to exchange PMs. But I will not post info in an open space for all the internet to see.

If camping…. Take as much gas as possible. It can be a long drive to the next station in the North Woods.

Excellent point. I will fill up in Ashland before heading into the woods. Then I will bring an additional 20 gallons with us in tanks. That's usually good for a week or so. Depends on how much driving you have to do to get into the birds.

I grew up in Oswego county. This gentleman is from Owego, west of Binghampton. Not Oswego, west of Syracuse.

I've spent alot of time in that area of the state ,specifically the northwest part of that section from 201 to the us canada border. Although I'm not an avid bird hunter and it's been 3-4 years, some years I shot grouse most days on the roads while running coyote traps, sometimes 2-3. Other years I might shoot 2-3 birds in a week. But keep in mind this was very minimal effort and not even getting out of the truck unless they were standing in the road. Like I said it's been a couple years so I might not be able to tell you where the perfect age cuts are right now, but if you choose to make the trip I can certainly point you in the right direction .
