What bullet would you use for deer hunting under 100 yards with this gun? It is a Rossi carbine with 16 inch barrel.

I’d use a 160 or 180 gr. Cast WFN, and shoot for the shoulder. Barring that, I’d use the 180 XTP of bullets available. If I could find some Speer 170 FN, I’d use those. Of all of the above, the Speer is the only one I’ve actually used. Marlin 1894P, 45 yards, pass thru with good expansion.

Yep. A 180 gr LBT designed WFN Hard Cast billets is hard to beat. And a 180 gr XTV would be my next choice.

If your reloading, a max load of WW-296 works well.

A quick opportunity came up for my middle son last year. I loaded the 180 gr XTP for his Henry and a deer and a hog dropped at the shot. Not surprised.

I have killed 20-30 deer/hogs in the last 30 years with 158gr soft points. They all will work... would not hesitate to use a lighter bullet either.

Thanks guys, I'll try some of the suggested rounds. This gift was not expected and I am not real familiar with 357 for hunting.

For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

A friend uses these from his .357 max rifle, 35 Rem and 356 win handguns. He has had excellent results from them.

158 gr (loaded properly for the 357) will be similar to the original 160 gr 30-30 loads from your carbine

I've used two bullets for my Marlin 1894:

158 grain Hornady XTP
158 grain Lee 358-158-RF. The latter was cast with a fairly soft alloy and powder coated using Yondering's Shake and Bake method.

158 gr Hornady XTP. About 13 gr of 2400. Mine is a Rossi 92
