One of those extreme high pressure systems settled in over the Liard basin and southeast Yukon is experiencing some extreme temperatures. Watson Lake is the coldest place on the planet this morning, and has been in the top 5 for a few days now. We could use some global warming if anyone has any to spare!

Yukon it’s even cold down here in the Deep South / LA / Lethbridge Alberta. -25C, although you might welcome those kind of temperatures now.

Had a bunch of snow on Thursday, then Friday and Christmas Day it warmed up. There was still snow on the ground Christmas morning but it was gone by noon. Got up to 8C.

Might be headed to Yellowknife in early February for work. I’ve seen -45 in Timmins. We’ll see how bad it is when I get to Yellowknife.

Good morning to you sir, I hope that you all had a good Christmas.

We started to get hit by a cold front and snow yesterday afternoon and it was -16° here with a lot of wind this morning.

Usually we don't get the blowing snow too much in our yard since we're half ways down a gully and sheltered by trees, but this morning the woodpiles and all areas outside were covered in a fresh blanket of snow.

That said sir, there is enough wood stacked up to last well into 2024 I'd think, so besides making more trips to the piles, we'll be fine.

All the best to you all in the New Year, may it bring you peace and fulfillment.

Dwayne

Dwayne, nice to hear from you. We did have a good Christmas, two of our three children showed up despite the cold temperatures.

Glad to hear you have a good woodpile. Wish i could say the same but I cant. Working away from home last summer ruined my plans to get my wood in early. So Ive been chewing away at it all winter. Not ideal, but better than paying a huge propane bill.

Hope the New Year is kind to you as well.

Must be what's heading here outside San Antonio where we are low 80's Friday and 55 on Saturday and, yes, I lived through 5 winters in Calgary and Ft. Saskatchewan. Looks like the cabin in north Idaho is pretty chilly as well.

Coldest I ever saw was in the mid 1970s in NW Ontario a little town called Armstrong. It was -68 F, mercifully with no wind. We had a week of -60 to -65F. My dad used to say that if the thermometer was a half inch longer we would have all frozen to death.

I know, "But it was a dry cold." (operative word being cold, not dry.) grin

My son is in Victoria and usually enjoys the mild weather there. Last summer they hit 45C (no one has AC) and this week he was complaining about -20C with the wind chill.

We’re right at freezing all week.

Cold all week here, looks like it’s going to stay that way for a bit.

Locals don't complain about the cold to outsiders, among ourselves we sure did. Here in Vancouver it's only unusual , when they broke records , it was only a degree or two.

Series 1950 US-OD woolens and under Armor with long johns/fur-fringed parker and
LL Bean boots -double socks work well. Outside Korea-era para cargo trousers over woolens.
Wool works even when damp. Carharts are OK for Fall, not Alaska or Canadian winters without
something else.

Interior Alaska near Nenana or Lake Minchumina-N. of Denali can spike down to
-70 below F. Really cold is when the grizzlies stay hibernated in spite of the tourists and cheechakos.

Not that records go back all that far in AK, but neither Nenana nor Minchumina have ever seen -70, nor anyplace else in AK for that matter. Nome was above freezing just a few days ago -- the caribou herds are in deep do-do. And here in the back of beyond it is snowing at -25C. Snow when it is that cold? The weather is weirder than we can understand.
