Per Henshaw the 3 position safety comes in '72. So it's at least between then and 1979. (Introduced in '66, total run of 287,648 with serial #s starting at 100,000, so you seem to be in the middle somewhere.)

PS - on some forums you'll see people saying to use the serial # search engine and just categorize it as a Model 70 because 670 isn't an option. That will give you a wildly incorrect date of production.

I wonder if Winchester has the correct information?
I will call them tomorrow and speak with the historian.

I would try Cody, but they want you to become a member first, its kind of expensive.

Yes, I tried that last night. Then I found a link on another forum with their information and there was none on the 670, 670a, 770, 770a or 70a. Kind of disappointed that they want you to pay for something that they don't have.

I was able to get close to 1972, the release of the 670a started in '72, but some 670s were released in late '71 and early '72 with the traditional 3 position safety before they dubbed it the 670a to stop confusion, then they shortly after released the 770 with walnut furniture and everything else the same. So that diluted sales of the 670 but they trucked on in true fashion.
It's a shame that the rifle that won the west has falling so far.

Well, Winchester hasnt been that Winchester in a long time. The company that made the 73 was long gone by the time the 70 came out. Some of the 670s have features of the 670a but the a models are stamped to distinguish.

I have Pop's 670 carbine in 30-06, has a trigger safety and anti bind slot in the lug. pretty sure he bought it before 1970.

I had a 670 carbine in 270 Win produced 1967 with the safety like Remington's on right side of stock. The wing safety on 670 started about 1972. From your numbering, I would estimate mid 1970s. The 670 was a great shooting rifle without the luster finish and facey stock.

I borrowed my cousin's 70A in .243 to kill my first deer, back around 1977. He still shoots that rifle on occasion, and it's still got it's Lyman All American 4X scope on it, too. Good rifles, even the 670s were decent, much better than the plastic abominations now gracing gunshop racks, anyway.
You can roll a turd in peanuts, dip it in chocolate, and it still ain't no damn Baby Ruth.
