The handles crack/break with a lot of use. These just slide on tight, maybe tap them together after you pull them out of the target, and they're easy to replace.
They are ONLY for throwing, they are not a camp hatchet I’ve chopped a fair bit of stuff with that style.

This is what I did. I volunteered, with no experience, to provide hatchet throwing at a church event. I tried several but the 18 inch Estwing with the blue handle was by far the easiest to stick. A bit heavy but also very durable. The shorter one with the leather handle works well too. YouTube was my friend for this.

While nobody was dumb enough to throw knives in combat, the Indians back East were known for their skill with thrown tomohawks.. The mo st famous thrown tomahawk i am aware of occurred at the Cherry Valley Massacre where the Mohawk leader Joseph Brant felled the Colonial Militia Colonel Ichabod Alden November 11th 1778.
Alden was attempting to get his damp pistol to spark and shoot Brant whereupon Brant threw hit Hawk and stuck it in Alden’s forehead.
Earlier that same year, in August, some of the Stockbridge Mohicans fighting on our side were reported to have thrown their hawks with lethal accuracy against the mounted dragoon’s of Lt. Col. John Grave Simcoe’s Queen’s Rangers before being overwhelmed in the Battle of the Bronx, August 31st.
Dunno of any thrown Hawk strikes by White guys, tho they prob’ly happened.

I used to throw quite a bit when my boys were smaller. The hawks I have are from HB Forge.

Sheriff, It ain’t in much better shape either! 😁 I still have one of Joe De La Ronde’s hawks. And an old H & B forge I bought in 1973!

When throwing to cut handles one strategy for the first thrower was to increase the distance half a rotation and throw the hawk with the blade facing backward. When done correctly the hawk stuck ‘upside down’ and the handle would slide out. A sidearm throw was good for cutting but as I recall if you did not cut a handle or stick your sidearm throw you lost the round anyway. I still have my H&B hawk but it has been a while since we went to a rendezvous.

They are ONLY for throwing, they are not a camp hatchet I’ve chopped a fair bit of stuff with that style. Same here. Not for splitting wood (obviously) but works as good or better for clearing shooting lanes and small limbs. I only goofed around with them with my son for throwing but keep your elbow at 90 degrees to your four arm when you release is the trick for throwing them.

You'll find your distance for a single rotation. Could be as short as 5 paces.
Gonna take some practice to stick double rotation distances.

That’s why I like the longer handles. Easier for me to control the spin. 12 feet is a common axe throwing distance. I’ve also read the stories of hatchets thrown in battle. I’m skeptical, as I don’t know how to get my adversary to stand in the right place. Plus, if I had such a nice weapon, I think I’d be reluctant to throw it away!
