I'll be taking on of my Model 70's chambered in 270 Win, 270 WSM, 7mm WSM, 300 WSM, or 30-06. I'll also bring my TC Encore 50 cal for ML season. After ML season I'll change out the barrel and use my 243 barrel. My Browning A-bolt Micro in 308 will also see some use.

Part of the hunt is trying to decide on which rifle to use that day.

In Ohio,
Marlin 512 12 ga.- Hornady 300gr. SST
.50 flintlock longrifle-Goex fffg round ball
Ruger SBH .44 Mag.-21.0 grs 2400 240 gr. Speer Gold Dot

If I hunt in a rifle state, which I'm planning on,
Ruger #1 .243- 95 Gr. Ballistic Tips handload
Winchester 94 .30-30- 150 gr. Power Points

Of course they dont count as calibers, but both my PSE compound and my Bear recurve will get more hunting time than all my guns combined.

Depending on where I'm at and how open the ground is the choices are: a Tikka T3 Hunter grade 6.5x55 wearing a Burris FF II, a M70Classic SS/syn 300Wmg wearing a 4x12 Swift Premier & a CZ 550 American in 9.3x62 wearing a Sightron 3x9. Still got a NIB T3 270 SS/syn & Buckmaster to put togther if I get a chance to go slogging thru the swamps of deep east texas or drift the Sabine River north of Lake Toledo Bend. No rush since I won't be going anywhere until Thanksgiving or later.

Got the Swede and Winnie up and running pretty well & just need to finalize the loads a little more, loaded the ole Mauser a couple box's today for a trip to the range later this week.

Will propel the "magicly flat bullet that defies logic" 100 grain Nosler Partition over H4350...grin...

May bloody the .243 some as well...

If I told ya'll what else I'll shoot my deer with I may have some folks get all riled up about my "ethics"...grin...

I feel like tempting fate this year, so I'm gonna use two variable scopes.

Those are great scopes though, Bob. I own five of 'em! One time I thought I wanted a fixed 4x until I compared the 2.5x8 set to 4x and found it to be better than the fixed scope. The other day, I was going to buy a 3.5x10 Loopy instead but side by side, the 2.5x8 was clearer and brighter at all settings. They are just great scopes. Anyway...

For me, it's my .358 Model 7 for blacktail. I load 200-gn Hornady Interlocks to 2600+ fps and it works great. Really hammers 'em.

For elk, my .338 Win Mag with 225-gn Accubonds (Bob! Don't say it! :-) )

The wild card is my .325 WSM Browning BLR. It'll get carried some elk hunting, and may even get carried for deer. I've taken it bear hunting a couple times lately. I dunno, it's an easy carry, is light and accurate, what's not to like? It's shooting 200-gn TSX's at 2900 fps.

My 30-06 was gonna be "a contenda" but dammit... when I added some pull weight to the Jewell on it, I noticed it's got a bunch of creep I can't adjust out. WTF!? Why me? Plus, I just put a new 2.5x8 on my .338 with the Boone and Crocket reticle so if I have longer-range stuff to do, I'll just grab that rifle since the Jewell on IT is working as advertised. Grrr.

The final wild card is my 7mm-08, which has been scope-less but suddenly there's a scope to put on it! I've been real curious to try that 120 BT everyone raves about, but, there's probably not really time to get it all set up. I do know it shoots that bullet great, but... Season starts in a week and a half and I am going to be very busy right up until opener.

I don't pick my opening day rifle until I am getting ready to leave the house. It just depends upon my mood and the weather.

The .30-30 and .30-06 are leading candidates. Like VAnimrod, 170g Partitions are likely for the .30-30. The .30-06 will get 165g TSX, or MRX or North Forks - undecided, obviously.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

It just depends (culling or trophy). Since the buffle grass is four + feet tall in the Golden Triangle of S. Texas, no need for a magnum this year as shots will be less than 200. That means one of the ladies in the 30-06 class will get the call for any trophy hunts. Probably a pre -64 fwt shooting the Barnes 150 gr MRX will get the nod if she has been treating me right at the range. For culls it will probably be the pre 64 fwt 280 shooting those Hornady LM 139 gr BTSP - they shoot better on the range than any of my other rifles with handloads. Like to take the doe in the neck/head with this rifle. Bring it on!
