Really do not see what the issue is. They are just trying to prevent a lot of returns from folks that do not know what they are doing. I would not take offense at being asked. Shows that the clerk does know the difference.
Some mornings, it just does not feel worth it to chew through the straps!~

Bingo! There are a lot of uninformed folks who have bought firearms lately because of the lawlessness in our country. Well guess what- we were all clueless at one point in our lives, granted for some of us it was over a half century ago.
I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

This morning I went in to the Sporting Goods store to pick up my order of bullets.
The earnest young store clerk person puts the box up on the counter, looks at the carton label, then looks at me, then at the carton label again.
Finally, earnest young store clerk person says: "you do realize these are BULLETS, and not LOADED AMMUNITION, right?". Me: "OMG, REALLY!???"
Meanwhile, my buddy the gun counter manager off to the side is just cracking up.
Finally he steps in and says: "Pud, you would not believe what we had to deal with during the Christmas rush. We finally had to tell everyone to point out the difference between bullets and ammo".
Dark clouds looming.... considering your location.. I don't see much outta wack.... ain't no different further south 500 miles off of I 5.... Oregon Millennials are about as smart as Washington Millennials...

... Lately when i buy bullets or brass they demand ID.. im near 60, and it isn't loaded ammo, but it ain't worth arguing with these clueless morons... Yeah, and most of the time I'm old enough to the grandfather of those that are asking. When they ask for a birth date I tell them 11/11/11 or 12/7/41. yeah, when ever I am asked what my name and address is " because its store policy".... I don't argue with them.. After Sandy Hook I was working the gun counter at the Hixson Academy. I had a guy come to the counter with a box of .22 Hornet ammo and asked if it would work in his 10/22. I can see why the clerks started asking.

Almost all LGS here have put up a sign in the reloading section that says “This is Not Loaded Ammo”. I have no problem with it. Let’s teach the new gun owners correctly. We need as many on our side as we can get.

I was told that the box only had bullets and not loaded ammo too once. The clerk said first, "do you handload"? I said, "only people that want to shoot and have ammo, do". He looked at me funny.

Was going to send a new Shaw barrel to a good friend in another state. Was going to send him the action, too. He
was going to do some work for me. Separately.
Our local post office has a reputation for marginal performance......... a well deserved reputation.
Without the rifle parts, i walked in to the post office and happened to be 'helped' by the 'post mistress'. Our conversation went something like this....
Me: Can i mail a rifle barrel thru the regular postal mail?
She: You cannot mail a firearm thru the mail without a special arrangement.
Me: I will try that again... Can i mail a RIFLE BARREL thru the regular postal mail?
She: Isnt a rifle barrel the same as the rifle?
Me: No. A rifle barrel is a steel pipe. About 2 feet long. No moving parts. No wood attached.
She: I dont know if that is allowed..................
Me: Can i mail a piece of a water pipe thru your mail system?
She: Well, I guess.....

So I did send the barrel thru the regular mail. Sent the action and some other stuff in a different container on a different day. This worked out fine.
I didnt know post office work was so complicated. :-)
This same post office is noted for weird mail delivery. I live about an hour from Minneapolis and the Star-Tribune comes to my house with the regular rural mail delivery. Used to work 6 days per week. Now since covid, my paper arrives only on schedule sometimes. sometimes a day or two late. [the latest was a week late ] I asked the above postocrat about the delays......
Me: My Tuesday Star-Tribune got to my house on Friday. Why the delay?
She: Sometimes the papers dont get here very promptly.
Me: My paper was 3 days late. Where was my paper for those 3 days??

Couple weeks ago at checkout local farm&barn store. I put 2 boxes Hornady 7mm 139 interlocks on counter.
Cashier kid asks for my id. I tell him it's not loaded ammo. Uh, ok, kid rings it up, off I go.
Farm&barn has policy to card all ammo purchases to ensure it's not sold to a minor. I'm 63.
Least I don't have to show a FOID card like the fibs do.

I had a devil of a time once, trying to mail a box of Nosler's to a friend. The lady clerk at the Post office said they couldn't mail "bullets". I said, ma'am, yes you can. You can't mail "cartridges", but, she said, "it says bullets right on the box". I said yes ma'am, that's the part the 'cartridge'" shoots out the barrel, its just copper and lead". After she checked with the Manager, she mailed them. wow. I’ve had the exact same thing happen. John

Local P.O. personnel know me on sight , always friendly and sometimes make light if things get ugly they know who to come to as I have shipped and received ammo components and guns quite a bit .
A month or so ago I was shipping a barreled action to a barrel manufacturer to have it checked out for accuracy issues .
Had it boxed and taped securely and lady , who knows me asks if there is anything in the box that could fire or explode .
I gave her a puzzled look and answered , no it’s just a barreled action that has the bolt removed .
She seemed really nervous and awkward while handling it .
Don’t know if she recently had a bad experience or had became a propaganda victim , she was really wierd about it .

Bingo! There are a lot of uninformed folks who have bought firearms lately because of the lawlessness in our country. Well guess what- we were all clueless at one point in our lives, granted for some of us it was over a half century ago. Worked the gun department of a regional chain from before Chinese flu until last fall. We sold ammunition and reloading components - when we had them. It was a daily occurance for customers to grab bullets thinking it was loaded ammo. It was especially common for 9mm as loaded ammunition and bullets both had "9mm" printed on the box. Not only did we have to deal with angry customers returning components thinking they had bought ammo, but we had to deal with customers not understanding the difference between bullets and cartridges. It wasn't newbies that were the problem, they were confused and were appreciative of an explanation. Instead, it was those who "had been hunting/shooting for years" that had no grasp of the differences. I made up and kept a dummy round in my pocket as a visual aid for these rubes. At no time did they appear appreciative. Those on the phone were the most fun. I really liked it when we were out of stock on both ammo and components or if we had both as I could just say, "No" or "Yes" respectively when asked if we had bullets. When we had just bullets rather than ammunition it was a pain as few knew the difference and refused to be educated. I began to just tell them no after initially asking which product they were looking for. It was not uncommon for the caller to show up anyway as they believed I was lying regarding ammo. I loved them to no end...
