Hello all and a belated Merry Christmas to you.
I have a Remington 700 Classic in .264 Win. Mag. that I have owned and hunted with almost exclusively since 1986. I don’t go out target shooting with it. Just hunt it, shoot it to ensure it’s sighted in, and shoot it when I have changed out scopes. That being said, our deer season recently changed here in SC and it used to be no limit on bucks and about as many does as a man could ever want to shoot. At one time we had 22 “doe days” per year with a two per day limit. The season has now changed to8 deer a year, but in the past a man could shoot a lot of deer.
A Local gunsmith looked in the bore and said it was about worn out and that I might have 200-300 rounds left in it. I don’t see any degradation in accuracy. I don’t know if the gunsmith borescoped it or not. He has not been very reliable at all with regard to other weapons he has worked on for me but he does work for a big name gunsmith here in SC, so I would hope he knows what he is doing.
Anyway, because the Rem. 7mm Mag. And 264 Win Mag. both use the same parent case, can I simply have my 264 rebored to 7mm or does it not work that way since the throat is eroded?
Thanks.
Dan

IMHO, you'd gain nothing... I'd shoot the .264 until it's obvious the groups are opening up to unacceptable levels... Then, either rebarrel to the .264 or 7mm RM and you'll have another 25-30 years of use.. Best of luck...

might be too small of a jump from 264 to 284. JES won't do it as he only rebores from 338 and up, but Danny Pedersen might

I doubt that anyone would bore it that small. If someone did they probably wouldn't re-rifle it, so it would end up worse. Shoot it until it quits shooting is my recommendation. When it quits shooting rebarrel it or sell it with full disclosure. Guys need actions.

Shoot it until groups open up, rebarrel back to 264 or 7 mag, maybe 270 or 257 Weatherby

Find a solid gunsmith. How bad is the throat? Enough shank to set it back and remember? Good chance not, but a good fix if it can work.

I'd check with Wayne York for the rebore, if needed or other options. If I remember right, to get a clean cut, you have to go + .030 bigger than the last bore size. So .264 to .284 would not work.

just put a new barrel on it on what caliber /cartridge you want but the bolt face is for a magnum , that old barrel probably cost over $300.00 to rebore new barrel probably around $500.00 and the new barrel will be much better barrel too.

Put in an add in classifieds or search the net. I'll bet there is a take off barrel in 264 out there you can buy for 50 -100 bucks. When the original goes replace it with your take off that you bought then you can still cash in on some collector value..mb

Hunting accuracy vs top-end target accuracy are two different things. If you're only shooting deer with it in the woods at likely 50-200 yards it will last your lifetime. Even slob accuracy of 4 inch groups would kill a deer every time.
700 Classics are collectible. You could sell it and the money would cover the cost of a new Ruger American.
2 many 22's and 2 little time

I remember Les Bowman shot a .264 model 70 3600 rounds and the accuracy was still good. No bore scopes or cronies in those days.. Probably your accuracy will be fine, but the speeds will have dropped off.

Probably your accuracy will be fine, but the speeds will have dropped off. A lot of the "shot out barrels" had a good amount of throat erosion. Given how short the throat on the 264 is, seating bullets a little further out as you increase round count helps. IME.
