I had a gunshop and would grab an armfull of rifles when I went hunting, at last count I think I've killed deet with 22 different cartridges and quite a few more different rifles as some were chambered for the same cartridge..
Now it pretty much depends on the game, terrain and hunting style. No really favorite as all my guns are fitted to me and I'm comfortable with all of them.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

For years it was a Remington 700 .280 Rem in a TI stock taking whitetail, muleys, hogs, coyotes, and elk. My last muley and elk were taken with a ULA in 300 Win. I hunt the West and prefer light weight rifles.

I don't hunt big game any longer so my "go to" rifle is more suited to varmints, it generalliy resides in a soft case on the back seat of my pick-up. Cooper model 21 Classic in 223 Rem with a Leupold VX-2, 4-12 with holdover dots.
223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.

For me its going to be any number of rifles chambered in 7MM-08, this being the current favorite.

I don't believe I have ever shot two animals with the same rifle. That's the problem I'm trying to have.. dave Yeah, I was wondering when you’d smell this thread! I make a conscious effort to get blood on any new rifle I acquire. I have 3 that are still virgins. Need prairie dogs. 🦫

My go to rifle used to be my 30-06, but that has changed to my pre64 300 H&H.

I don’t think that you or most folks would be interested in mine, though it’s worked quite well for me for all big game and the occasional varmint, from heavy timber to wide open areas of Wyoming! Easily good to 800 yards and beyond (energy and velocity) for big game, though my personal limit is 600 yards in ideal conditions! One bullet, one zero, one cartridge.....it simply works! memtb

My go to is my left hand tikka t3 270wsm. I’ll play around with some of my other stuff but on important hunts (I have never hunted dangerous game) I grab that rifle

I've been playing with a few calibres over the past 10 years but there are a couple of favourites that I keep coming back to when hunting deer, pigs and foxes.
Ruger Hawkeye in .257 Roberts - Loopy 2.5-8x36
Mauser M12 in 6.5x55 - Swaro 3-9x36
Ruger 1A in 7x57 - Loopy 6x36
But the 7x57 Number 1 would be the one that I would keep till last.
