Pretty interesting 8+ minute video ( film) from 1918. "Manufacturing the Model 1917 Bolt-Action Rifle". For your viewing pleasure. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=39wM-lzDWE4

Boy! OSHA would have a field day in a plant like that today. One of the first things I thought as well. BTW, there's also one there on the BAR.

That was great! Repeating the same action over and over is almost as good as CNC. Interesting! Slushing the rifles was applying cosmoline? Yes.

Some of the workers (for example the guys doing the barrel straightening) were wearing ties!

Some of the workers (for example the guys doing the barrel straightening) were wearing ties! Yes, it was being filmed, so it would have been a formal assembly.

Some of the workers (for example the guys doing the barrel straightening) were wearing ties! Was quite common among blue collar workers at the time, and even later.

Thanks for posting. Very interesting indeed. Notice all the belt driven stuff? That was once almost the norm in industrial settings like that. Reminded me of the paper mill my paternal grandfather worked in for 42 years ( 1916-1958) where it seemed like every moving thing in there was belt driven. Even had stuff upstairs running off a big long belt that came up from below through two slots in the floor. The main power was a rotating shaft downstairs that ran stuff on both floors.
