I have a late 60’s Marlin 336 in .35 Remington on which I plan on mounting a 1978 Leupold M8 2.5x Compact scope. My question is, what would be the proper, era correct, base/ring combination for the 1978 scope on that gun? Thank you.

Weaver rings and bases, or Redfield Junior

Good afternoon, I hope the weekend was a good one for you and this finds you well.

While I'm not suggesting this is period correct, here's an example of that scope on a '70's 336 with a Weaver rail and some no name aluminum rings.



It was a remarkably useful rifle, very fast and easy to hit with offhand.

A friend dropped by, handled it for a bit and then began to offer me more money than I could refuse, so I no longer own it.

Hopefully at least this gives you a visual of one way to do it.

The coolest way would be to find a Pachmayr Swing mount or a Weaver pivot mount. I've had a few of these setups - most memorable on a Win 88, and they are definitely period and they definitely work. Bonus is you can still use your irons.
