A question, I have some possible donor guns in safe, so in general would you rather start a custom from scratch or upgrade/modify an existing?

Depends upon how far from the desired finish the donors are currently.

It really depends on the donor. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has tried to turn chicken [bleep] into chicken soup by pouring money into a black hole trying to make a decent rifle.

That may be possible if I sell everything else and go down to a 2 rifle safe!

depends if the action is big/strong enough for the intended cartridge

for example, trying to cram the 338 Lapua Magnum into a Win 70 pre-64 isn't gonna work out well, lots of custom actions for that one though

Definitely understand the limitations, I have a range of potential donors from .22-250 to .338 win mag. But thinking might be easier to sell them to fund custom then mess with the hassle.

If going to custom actions then do yourself a favor and contact John Pierce at Pierce Engineering in Michigan, he makes actions to house anything from 223 to my 400 Warlord beast and up to the 50 BMG and larger ELR wildcats

he makes actions in chrome moly steel, stainless steel & titanium as well, if looking for a lightweight build

his shop is currently building us three actions for my moose hunting buddies that will be chambered in my wildcat the 300 Razor and we've had him build us complete guns before

Pierce can sell you an action for your smith to build on or he can build you the complete rifle

call him.. John Pierce is very approachable and easy to communicate with, fantastic gentleman
