We've got two kids, ages two and almost seven. They are both schooled in firearms safety to the extent that is possible, given their tender ages. Before we had them, I had a 686 Smith and Wesson .357 Mag. stoked with 125 grain Federal JHP's or 110 Winchester JHP's right beside the bed on the nightstand. Since the kids got old enough to be mobile, I've had my Beretta M9 up on the top shelf of the closet, with the clip and its Cor Bon 115 JHP's beside it. The semi-auto gives just a little more edge against the kids getting it and accidentally discharging it. Otherwise I think the aforementioned .357 to be the ne plus ultra of home defense guns.
I've also got a Cimmarron 1873 in 44 Spec. on the wall rack along with my BB gun for varmints. In the closet are a Mini 14 and a .22 for varmints too big for the 44 Spec.

We have a big old small-town house in the Western Minnesota lakes country that was in my wife's family. I go there a lot, and often alone.
Ya hear a lot about break-ins and other stuff going on all the time- and this house is vacant most of the time- so my bedside traveling companion "currently" has been a CZ-40 P that has been stowed in a black video-type satchel, along with a part of my black Cold-Steel knife collection, extra ammo (including a box of 20 Winchester SXT .40 S&W), some extra mags, a couple of new-tech black flashlights, also a little Beretta .32 Tomcat in a web-pocket (for late night bath-room forays) ... and, my black ski-mask.
I also take along my all black Ruger PC-4 semi-auto carbine with ghost ring sights ... and sometimes my brown dog, Blackie.

I encourage anyone to "stop by" around 3am anytime and find out.
if the little dog with the big bark don't get it, the big dog with the big bark ought to, and if they still want to come into the house filled with dead stuff....a win 1200 getting racked will hopefully turn them around. of course there is not always time to go to the closet, so close at hand is, mine, a smith 1911 with night sights, and hers, a glock 21 also with night sights. I would suspect that the sunburn from a pair of surefire lights would be enough to make you wish you were dead, but if not a good flurry of winchester ranger ammo will work.
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.

I don't have one, I don't believe in guns! Guns are real, whether you believe in them or not, just like Santa and the Easter Bunny.

Ethan, I have grandkids who come over occasionally, tho they are never left alone nor have the run of the house.
A few years back, I purchased several deep frame type shadow box gun hides for the bedroom wall and a few other places.
Look just like a picture in a deep frame but the front is hinged and the pistol or revolver resides inside.Fast to access even when just awakened.
The one above the nightstand my side of the bed hides my S&W 686, alternately loaded with 158 grain JHPs and Cor Bons and an extra speed loader.
The picture in the frame is the old one of the praying hands..which exemplifies my prayers that I never NEED to deploy that or any other weapon for home defense..:)So far we have had no instances ..
I think Sportsman's Guide has them reasonably priced as probably others do. They can be placed at adult eye level on the wall, and unlike a keybox or lockbox safe, are not immediate magnets for housebreakers if one is away from home. Jim
