One of the strangest things I have ever seen. Several years ago we held a turkey shoot. 10 targets were placed side by side at 100 yards. A shooter came up with a new M99 Savage with scope. Each shooter shot a target in numreical order. The fellow with the Savage fired before me. I sat at the bench to shoot and noticed a hole in my target. He said he fired at #5 and mine was #6. The target was replaced and we carried on. After tha results were measured he said he had fired the rifle a few times but didn't know how well it shot. Several people checked it out and everyone figured it was not sighgted in. He fired a few shots at a sghter target and ended with a 3 foot group. Must be the scope. We removed the scope and shot some more, several very good shooters with the open sights. After a box of cartidges it was apparent it was a 36 inch grouper. The gunsmith who sold him the rifle took it back with him to his shop but I never found out what the problem was. It was a 284 win. Incedentally all the bullet holes were round, no keyeholes

That's pretty bad! Barrel worn out? Could be a combination of problems.

My experience with the 284 chambered 99s has been just the opposite, in that they have been the most accurate non-'smithed 99s, along with the 99Cs in 22-250, that I've owned and shot. It takes a lot of "bad" to shoot a 36" group at 100 yards. Most people could shoot 36" with shotgun slug, a smooth bore, and a bead front sight.

Like to see what groups it shoots with the forearm off and receiver resting on sandbags.
