The masonry trade is pretty labor intensive, so the cost in many areas is rising. Tuck pointing us somewhat like painting......With s little motivation, an average guy can compete a reasonable sized project by himself.

I deal with a lot of masons. It's really time consuming, that's why it's so expensive. Plus, all of my customers are way too busy and they don't want to dick with it. It's a total pain in the ass.

Be right up some old man’s alley, nothing else to do, retired, feeble. Can sit in a chair and dick with it a little at a time between bites of peanut brittle. Put himself an AM radio out there with 650WSM Grand Ole Opry music playing thru a 3 inch speaker.
Have his little mud tray on a TV stand beside him and scoot around.

I just regrouted our master bath shower a couple weeks ago. Used a Porter Cable multi tool to clean out the old grout. Don`t need to do that again in this lifetime !
