I just opened up a box of Nosler bullets (previously opened), and some of the bullets are covered in a black tarnish.

They were wrapped in the factory plastic bag inside the foam wrapper that Nosler packages their bullets in. My house is warm and dry, never humid.

What would cause this?

Will it affect performance, ballistically or terminal, or harm my barrel?

They're morphing into Black Talons....

Won't effect a thing. A little tarnish from oxidation.

The oxidation won’t hurt a critter’s feelers.

Oxidation????
But you described good enviorment.

Or a color hue change of the jacket??
Hue change might be simple over time reaction of materails used in the construction???

Similar to galvanic reaction???
Like aluminum and steel being together over time.

Shoot em up and get new ones.
Maybe they tweaked the ratio,s of materials on that lot or lots???

Always some good idea fairy at ammo plant mtgs...

Had some 53 varmageddons that came like that. Nosler stated it was the solvent used to make their new Green (liberal speak) box gassing off. Didn’t believe that but they shot good, looked good after using some media polish on a cloth that took the black tint right off.

Put them in your case tumbler for five minutes, much of it should go away. Shouldn't even need to add polishing goo. Or get an old sock (no holes, of course) and some Dawn, load the sock, fill a bowl or the bottom of your sink with nice warm Dawn water, give them a scrub and good rinse.

Throw them in a jar of vinegar with couple spoons of salt, give them a little shake for about a minute, rinse them off good with water and dry them and they will look as good as the day they were made.

I’ve had a couple of boxes with some bullets having black discoloration too. I think they were 30 cal 125 Accubonds and may have been seconds from SPS. It looks like overspray of the black coating that the Ballistic Silvertips are given. I just buffed them for a few seconds with fine steel wool. They shot well.

I have found that type of stuff on some from long ago and all i did was test to see if it would come off by hand.

Nope won't move so they got shot.

I have a few boxes from the 50-60's that have the same thing.

Might be graphene oxide from a spilled covid vaccination?

Check to see if they are magnetic now.
