A Veteran.......
Whether on active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve...
is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank
check made payable to "The United States of America",
for an amount of "up to and including my life".
That is honor, and there are way too many people
in this country who no longer understand it.

Unfortunately, though, it's not "The United States of America" that cashes that check, it's whatever politicians happen to be in power when his number comes up.

But a good definition none the less. you don't necesarily consider the power brokers when you sign on the line. It's just something you do.

Also note that there is no expiration date on that check. Those who truly mean it when they raise their hand and take that oath (to defend the Constitution, BTW, not to defend politicians), it's a commitment forever. Part of that oath is to defend against "enemies both foreign and domestic" and THAT is what makes some like Bill and Hillary shake in their pantsuits.
