I have a project that I'd like some advice on. I have a nice VZ24 action that currently has the 8mm barrel on it, the barrel is no good, and I want to get a barrel of some kind for it. I can do all the machining myself but was wondering what brand barrel you fellows might suggest. It will be a .338 win mag caliber. Thanks Jim

Pick any quality barrel that is available and proceed to have fun. Threading and chambering the barrel is the easy part. Opening the boltface, altering the extractor, getting the proper mag box, altering the feed rails, that's where the fun beigins.

338-06 and no need to open bolt face or feed rails.

When you worked the bolt after the first shot, no chance of a fail to feed. It had already spit all the loaded rounds out. Don't know if they ever got it sorted out or not.

Over the last 20 years, I have converted some of my VZ24s to; 308, 257 Roberts Ackley, 260 Rem, 7mmRemMag, and 300WinMag.
But 60 years ago, there was another little boy on the playground that explained to me about bending the bolt on a Mauser.

If I did another VZ24 today, it would be a Bartlein stainless barrel with 2B taper. The cartridges I favor based on long range deer hunting are; a) 6.5-06 A Square [uses 30-06 brass, not 270 brass] b) 280 AI [use Nosler brass already formed] c) 7mmRemMag [Seat at 3.34" load to 70kpsi, no 3.29", 62kpsi sammi silliness ]
