Hi,

Thanks for all the help ageing my 99.

I guess this question pertains to rifles other than my 99.

I want to know a source for inexpensive 308 ammo. So far I have never used a bench rest; I shoot prone, kneeling, sitting or off-hand. My desired accuracy is that of the vital area of a white-tailed deer. I have gotten such accuracy for my 30-30 using serbian cartridges. Any brands you would recommend or steer away from? Cabela's has fmj Wolf ammo (for target practice) in 308 at a good price. I assume if the box says 308 it's not 7.62 military stuff repackaged.

Thanks,

Bob

Cabela's had Federal for $9.95 per box a few weeks ago. I bought some and was surprised that they shot 1.5" or less at 100.

From what I understand, 7.62x51 NATO ammo IS the same at .308 Winchester.

However, don't expect it to be as accurate as some of the premium ammunition from known ammo loaders such as Federal, Winchester, Remington, Hornady, etc., etc., etc.

Also don't forget that loaded ammo shipped to you will have a "hazardous freight charge" just as powder or primers would have. This charge is usually $15 per shipment and I've noted that there may be other charges due to the nature of the items shipped in addition to the $15.00 charge, so be aware of the TOTAL COST of any ammo, powder or primers you order which will be shipped via the common carriers from the seller to you because these "extra charges" obviously raise the cost per round by a considerable margin.

308 in a 99 can kick a bit. You might find someone to load some 125 grain ammo for you.

Thanks for the replies,

I've read on this forum that 7.62 ammo often sticks in the chamber. I have gathered that 308 and 7.62 are NEARLY Identical but NOT IDENTICAL. Google searches have also produced info. on the two.

I will be aware of shipping costs. I don't recall shipping costs being high for ammo I ordered in the past.

I live in the northwoods of Wisconsin.

I've used 7.62 in my 99 with no problems at all.

I have used surplus NATO 147 grain ammo from either South Africa or Australia (don't remember which) and Federal Premium .308 BTSP 165 grain. The point of impact has been very close between the two groups, and the overall accuracy is equal; both types of ammo produced groups under 1.5 inches at 100 yards from a bench rest.

Surplus ammo is getting much harder to find, and prices for all ammo is up by at least 50%, and may even double soon, from what it was just a year ago. I purchased several boxes of the Federal ammo in the same lot number, so I don't have to waste ammo sighting in and re-zeroing every time I open a new box of ammo. Many people do not realize that there may be significant changes in point of impact between different lot numbers from the same manufacturer and same bullet loading.

Everyone seems to be out of Wolf ammo in 308--probably because it's the least expensive.

Ron T, there isn't any HAZ/MAT charge on loaded ammo. I have ordered quite a lot from Midway and never been charged extra. HAZ/MAT is for powder and primers, or any explosive. Chip
