Old guy here with a new toy, S&W AR-15. Took it to the range for the first time and after thirty shots unable to even get on paper. The shortest range distance was 50 yards. I have no idea where it was hitting. I haven't shot a rifle on this platform in 50 years since my Vietnam Army training. HELP PLEASE.....

Take upper off lower, remove bolt carrier and look down bore at a distant object. Helps to have it on some kind of rest. Adjust your sights, red dot or scope to what you see down bore.

Another thing is to buy a cheap poster board and put target in center. Should get on paper that way after bore sighting.

Wheeler makes a magnetic laser that you put on end of muzzle or muzzle device. About $100 but very handy especially on auto rifles where you can't bore sight, say a marlin model 60. Always gets me very close

Good suggestions. No one wants to be that guy that burns up 30 rounds trying to find paper. IN this instance I suggest shooting 1 shot at 25 yards, then making your adjustments from there. Remember its going to take 4 times as many clicks to zero. I have done this with some of my AR's. It's quick and dirty. Shooting offhand even works. 1 shot, dial and then shoot at 100. Should be on paper.. May take 3 shots to rough zero and then shoot a group (even 3 shots) and dial from there. Again, no need for special tools, unless it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. Then go for it..
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I have always just pulled the rear pin. Pull the carrier out. Put it cross ways to the receivers to block em open enough to see down center of barrel and target. Adjust cross hairs as needed to get to center.
Once I"m close I do this 5-6 times right quick tweaking.
I"ve never been off so far I'd not kill a pig or deer with a center mass aim at 100. Usually its easily within 4 inches or less of center.
THEN you fire the first shot perfectly. Hold the gun with cross hairs on center of target and move cross hairs to bullet hole one plane at a time and you are zero'd in one shot for the most part.

Yep, this is the easiest way and it works! Know in my house as redneck bore sighting. Works for AR service rifle iron sighting too.
