8" strikes me as pretty unusual but I'm not so up to date anymore.

Pre-lock?
$800 in average to above average condition
Early dash - with box, etc - $1000
Later dash with MIM and lock - subtract $50-150.
The 8 inch barrel isn’t a killer, it’s not the most popular length by far - but there’s plenty of handgun hunters that would use it.
YMMV

Forgive my ignorance I have not kept up with handguns for some time. I am assuming the dash reference is in either the serial number of model number. Checking the gun I do not find any such mark this oun is part of my late brother in laws collection I have ben tasked with the sale.no box or paperwork the Ser# shows AEL47XX. Thanks for any info you can provide. As I said I am not up on handguns so bear with me. What is the lock being asked about?

If you open the cyl and look on the yoke ( the forward part of the cyl were it connects to the gun there will be stamped 586-? and the serial number). The ? is what they want. There may be nothing after the 586 or a -1,2,3,4,5

Dash number is part of the model number when you open the cylinder and look inside the crane. If it just says "586" that's a no-dash. Otherwise would say 586-1, 586-2, etc. A no dash may have the letter M meaning it went back to the factory for the no-dash "recall". Think I'm remembering that right.
Thought I had hit refresh, no idea how I missed previous post.

looks like yours was made in 84 and would be a "no dash". in other words the model number on the crane would say "mod 586"

The stainless version of it, the 686, can be had in 8 3/8" for 1K or a little less on Gunbroker. I picked up one with the adjustable front sight for $1250 recently. I don't know this for a fact, but the 586 is probably worth a little more than the 686 because they discontinued them sooner.

The other question is what front sight does it have?
Some of these 8 3/8” 586 and 686 guns had adjustable front sights (for metallic silhouette shooting). These generally bring a little more than either the ramped sight with orange insert or the Patridge front sight which has a square face. I would pay more for the adjustable sight and a little more for the Patridge.

Thought I had hit refresh, no idea how I missed previous post. Beware of the 586-no dash to 586-2 without the M: [quote]In 1987, seven years after the release of the Model 686, there were reports of cylinder binding with some types of standard .357 Magnum ammunition for L-frame revolvers manufactured before August 1987. S&W published a product warning and authorized free modification to the revolver. All affected revolvers repaired for this recall were stamped with an M on the yoke near the model number. Thus it is known as the M modification for all 686, 686-1, 586-1, and 586-2 revolvers (Wiki) There is more to read about on the S&W forums.

Just for perspective, I would certainly not look askance at a “no-dash” gun, and the market agrees with me. If it is troubling, Smith and Wesson will do the modification for free. I’ve had a couple of them without mods and they have worked flawlessly; one remains.
