A 375H&H is a very versatile cartridge. Put it in a well designed CRF rifle and you will not regret it.
I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all. Jack O'Connor

So... You've got a golf bag of rifles to use and a son in college If you were to leave your son one rifle... One RifleI got to hold an authentic JH Rigby & Sons in .416 Rigby once. Serial number on the gun was 3. It was a moving experience. Both getting to hold it, and looking at the price sticker the store wanted for it. It was priced right to sell too ... if it were a 3 bedroom 2 bath house. And today you can order out a Rigby Highland Stalker for around half the price of a detached one car garage. Edit; Even your property would look odd with half of a garage!!!

I looked at this recently too having been playing with my .35W as a big rifle. I was kicking around a .375 in either h&h or Ruger or maybe a .416. After looking long and hard I bought more bullets for the .35 whelen. With new powders I can push 225s pretty hard and if I need penetration I’ll jump up to the 250s. I can collect guns when im old and can’t hunt, but for now my money is going on trips.
As far as the bison hunt, I did one last fall in North Dakota, with the whelen. The ranch owner was very impressed and while it may not be new or flashy shaving confidence in your rifle is worth alot.
YMMV David

"One Man One Rifle One Land" by JY Jones. Hunted and took every big game species on the North American continent with a M700 30-06 ADL. Now run it by me again what your 35 Whelen and 250 grain NPT's won't do? Mb

Now run it by me again what your 35 Whelen and 250 grain NPT's won't do? Mb LOL -- I never said the Whelen was inadequate - I absolutely love my Whelen and will never part with it. I think I'm just getting antsy cause I sold my Rigby a couple years ago and never replaced it, and now my son wants my .500. There ain't a thing in the world I "need" - I just want (or think I want), a Win70 or Mauser to say I've got CRF -- and yeah, I know I don't "need" that either. Bison. And you're not looking for a 45-70? We're taking a BigHorn Armory Model 89 levergun in .500 SW. Near enough to a ,45-70 to be within spitting distance. Planning on Underwood 420 gr Copper solid "Extreme Penetrator" at about 2000-2100 fps out of the Model 89. Most .45-70 I've looked at says 400gr @ about 1900 - 2100 fps, so I don't think the buffalo will be able to tell. And y'all try not to laugh, but I almost suspect my son may be shooting the thing over a hay-bale. I hope not, but I have to wonder. I almost asked the guy had these bison had all their shots and wormings.

Too late fellas.
I bid on and won a Ruger #1 stainless laminate .375 H&H tonight. It won't replace the Whelen, but whenever I get a wild hair for something a little more exotic, it'll be there waiting.
My daughter has a Ruger #1 RSI International stainless with a Mannlicher stock in .308. I'm thinking to try and find a smith willing to convert this .375 into a stainless laminate mannlicher so my daughter and I can have matching Ruger #1 Mannlichers.
Now I've got to work out the project ideas to go Ruger #1 .375 H&H stainless/laminate Mannlicher. Might need a new barrel because of the factory sling-swivel barrel band. Rosewood laminate and FDE or midnight bronze Cerakote metalwork to match that brown scope Leupold offers.

There are some guys on there that have done or had done some extensive custom work on No. 1s. They would be able to point you in the right direction.

I'd fret not the CRF and take the 35 Whelen. It seems like an old friend that should go with you.
Use new FLR brass and you'll not have any problems.
