Calera police arrest man carrying bolt-action rifle converted into handgun by: Drew Taylor Posted: Feb 8, 2022 / 06:01 PM CST Updated: Feb 8, 2022 / 06:01 PM CST
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — On Tuesday, officers with the Calera Police Department arrested a man carrying a rifle that had been converted into a handgun.
According to the CPD, two officers noticed a person acting suspiciously in a neighborhood. When approached, the suspect ran and was later found at a local gas station. The suspect, from Chilton County, had a concealed firearm and is a prior convicted felon with two active arrest warrants from separate cities.
Design company responsible for ‘F!’ logo won’t handle website redesign “The firearm, while not a thing of beauty, appears to be functional,” the CPD stated in a message posted on their Facebook page. “This used to be someone’s .22 caliber bolt action rifle but has been modified apparently to be concealed.”

Looks like a Winchester. He probably could have traded that for a decent handgun before he got out the hacksaw.

The article sort of says he was charged with cutting down a rifle. He was actually charged with being a felon in possession of a gun. Once both the barrel and stock were cut off, it's a handgun. It's not exactly pretty and I sure wouldn't shove it in my pocket without a trigger guard, but it's handgun by any definition I've read.

That's some top-notch gun smithing right there. A firearm any of us would be proud to own.

Cutting it down doesn't turn it into a pistol, it becomes a short barreled rifle and must be registered with the ATF as such on a Form 1, pay the $200 tax stamp prior to cutting barrel to a length shorter than 16 inches.

No, it's a straight reading of the National Firearms Act of 1934, passed by congress, not the ATF. We can agree it's unconstitutional, regardless, it still applies in this instance.
