Great on fox out to 125 yards or so. Shoot 'em through the boiler room. Negligible fur damage.

I sure like mine. My bait pile in front on the ice here is at exactly 200yds. I shot a coyote maybe 4 yards this side of it with my .17 last winter. Granted a solid setup, hit right behind the shoulder no big bones.
Normally I’m very happy with it on coyotes out to125yds or so staying off the big bones.mine likes the grey tips, heavier loads.
Shoot what you like.

17WSM was on my radar but I will not buy a savage B.mag unless I could find a heavy barrel target model.

What do you guys think about 17 HMR or 22 mag for my needs? 17 HMR is flatter shooting which is nice, put the crosshair where you want and pull the trigger with no thought, but the 22 mag obviously has more energy transfer for when a coyote pops up… I’m torn

I prefer the 22 mag.

I feel the 22 mag will be the best for what you need.

Like rockinbbar said I also try to shoot for the vitals and avoid the shoulder. Very minimal fur damage. I have killed foxes cleanly out to about the 125 range, but always try to let them come in closer when calling. My personal limit on coyotes with the Mag is 100 but I prefer 75 or less. Have had unrecovered runners past that. They died Im sure but with little blood and thick terrain they went unfound.

Also would recommend using good glass, not one of those cheap plastic clamshell packed rimfire scopes! Will be especially beneficial for lowlight or night hunting with lights.

I use the Marlin 883 .22mag for basically any varmint that crosses in front of our house from groundhogs to coyote to fox on occasion.
Most shots range from 50 yds to 150 with no issue.

What are some of the more accurate rifle platforms in 22 mag? Like anything else, I’m sure some are better than others

I was looking at a Ruger precision rifle but I think that might be a little more flashy than what I need to shoot coyotes and fox

22 mag followed by 17 HMR

I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects

I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

Unlike the simple choice between the 17hmr and the .22 mag, rifle platforms are numerous.

This could take a while.lol

I have a 22 mag and wish it were a 17hmr. Can’t sell it because my son shot his first woodchuck with it and can’t afford to shoot it much because the ammo is stupid expensive. From what I’ve seen, the worst 17hmr ammo will outshoot the best 22mag ammo all day long.

Havent really found a 22 Mag that "didnt shoot" after all we are talking ranges od probably 150 MAX. In rimfires its usually a case of finding a load that particular gun likes. I have 6 22 mags ranging from a CZ to a Ruger American Rimfire. The Ruger which was the cheapest of them all actually happens to be damn accurate at 100 with CCI Gamepoints so is often carried while calling. Im in SE Pa and most of the gunshops I frequent usually have a few used 22 Mags sitting around. If you get a mag and need ammo to try a few different loads let me know as I have some I could part with.

Both my Marlin 22 MAG bolts hold 1" at 100. One is stainless/composite and about five years old. Loves the Hornady 30gr (?) Vmax, the other is 32 years old wood/steel. That one loves the Remington 40gr HPs...

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”
