I think most Canadians who post here know about this. For those who don"t, CATF has been around for almost 40 years and continues the old fashioned way - in print.

I grab an issue on occasion. Great publication.
Anyone remember the GUNRUNNER? Laid out just like a newspaper. I used to get it regularly in the early-mid 80's then lost track of it.

You can get the CATF at gunshows if you are there early. I think the Gunrunner has been gone a long time. The only thing I remember from that, apart from the ads was, "The Major's Mortar".Laycock from the NFA wrote the column. He's dead, I believe.

Sorry to hear that. I have a subscription to CATF and was recently chatting on line with Donovan Dewis the publisher there. We were having discussion about a gentleman from that area that we both know, the Yukoner.

The Major's Mortar was a good read. The man knew his stuff. He passed quite a while ago I believe.

Ray Laycock was a good man who spent years of his life fighting for gun owners rights. He was also a very enthusiastic Ross Rifle collector who shared his knowledge with anyone who was interested in Ross rifles or history. The Gunrunner was a great read in its day and served the needs of many shooters and collectors. Internet sites now make it very challenging for printed material and the slower communication of the day, often by snail mail. Hopefully CATF can continue to survive the political climate and business challenges. I only met Paul Rogan once, he was very enthusiastic about his publication and defending the rights of firearm owners. Finding a replacement for Mr. Rogan would be very difficult.

One gunshow that I used to visit had a large seating area for eating and chatting. There was a table with copies of magazines that people would bring into the show to recycle. There were also complimentary copies of several magazines and show flyers. I remember one particular show, just before I went overseas, that had a pile of SIR catalogues. I grabbed three to take with me to Germany. They ended up in the mess on a table we used for magazines, pocket novels and travel flyers. They were well used and appreciated by all who read them. smile

SIR is missed for sure. Enjoyed their catalogues too. Used to drive to Winnipeg when I was posted to CFB Shilo in 1980-83 on days off to hit up the store/warehouse. Shop and grab some fliers and seasonal catalogues.
Used to be a cool surplus store on Portage Ave close to the infamous Portage and Main corner. We used to buy a bunch of camping and hunting stuff in there too. I bought a Kassnar .22 M16 look a like there. Walked out of the store for about 1/2 block to where my Trans Am was parked with it. No body even looked at me.
Likely had a box of ammo in my pocket....try that today.

They were different times. We had a rifle range in the basement of my high school. Cadets used to travel on the bus into town with rifles. They were cased, but most people knew what those kids were carrying. shocked.

Like you said, try that now! laugh

Steve here a beautiful article regarding guns from your beloved CBC. I know you would enjoy this unbiased piece

The federal government's proposed gun-control laws are "toothless and cowardly," victims of gun violence in Ontario said Thursday.

The Danforth Families for Safe Communities advocacy group as well as other families affected by gun violence sent a letter to Public Safety Minister Bill Blair outlining their disappointment as the national Liberal convention gets underway this week.

The group of victims and families affected by Toronto's Greektown mass shooting that left two dead and 13 hurt say the government's plan to allow municipalities to ban handguns should be scrapped and replaced with a federal law banning handguns outright.

"The handgun piece is just a disaster, it's an abdication of their responsibilities," said Ken Price, whose daughter, Samantha, was injured after being shot on July 22, 2018 by a young man on a rampage.

Woman and girl dead, 13 other people injured in Danforth shooting in Toronto
Bill C-21 would give municipalities discretion to ban handguns, if they choose, through bylaws restricting their possession, storage and transportation.

It also proposes a buyback of many recently banned firearms that the government deems to be assault-style weapons, but owners would be allowed to keep them under strict conditions.

Quinn Fallon, left, and Noor Samiei, centre, are members of a group called Danforth Families for Safe Communities calling for tougher gun laws. (Evan Mitsui/CBC News)
The group said Blair, a former Toronto police chief, failed by not delivering a stronger handgun ban.

While the group applauded the federal government for banning military-style rifles, it slammed the optional "buyback" program.

"You must do better," the families wrote to Blair.

Gun violence worsening in Canada, StatsCan says

Gun violence continues to worsen in Canada. The rate of violent gun offences increased for a fifth straight year in 2019, according to a 2020 Statistics Canada report.

In Toronto, the number of people killed or injured by guns has increased significantly since 2015, when the Liberals came to power.

That year, 24 people died after being shot and 126 people were injured after 288 total shootings.

In 2020, 39 people died and 178 others were hurt in 462 shootings in Toronto.

Those who wrote to Blair also criticized a proposed "red flag" portion of the legislation that would allow residents to seek a court order to have someone's guns seized if they think that person is a threat to public safety. The idea is to help women facing domestic violence, or families of those who are suicidal.

"Women already don't trust police or courts to protect them from domestic abuse or sexual assault, so why would we expect police or courts to protect us from guns?" said Alison Irons.

Her daughter, Lindsay Wilson, was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, who then killed himself in 2013 in Bracebridge, Ont.

According to a 2020 Statistics Canada report, the rate of gun violence in Canada has continued to increase. (Erik White/CBC)
"I'm a diehard Liberal but I see this bill as toothless and cowardly," she said.

Irons played an instrumental role in a different piece of gun-reform legislation -- Bill C-71 -- part of which would allow a
background check on a gun-buyer's entire life. Currently, background checks are limited to the past five years.

While that bill has been enacted, it hasn't been fully implemented, including the extended background check provision,
Irons said.

"My daughter's killer had a criminal record or personal violence that he hid from her," she said.

He had been convicted of forcible confinement and an assault related to a drug deal, Irons said, and received two years
probation. The man then applied for his gun license and received it, she said.

"It's an appalling example of how the system is failing Canadians," Irons said.

The group said they will fight the Liberal government on the issue, especially if an election is called this year.

Victims and families of Danforth shooting call for handgun, assault rifle ban in 1st public remarks
Mary-Liz Power, a spokeswoman for Blair, said the Liberal government seeks to end gun violence in the country.

"We have taken the strongest and most extensive action to end gun violence that our country has ever seen," Power said.

Tis a shame to read of the changing times.

We are currently fortunate that wife and I have a handgun on us most of the waking day wherever we are.

Some ask what we are scared of. Nothing.

But then again we carry first aid, fire extinguishers too for the same reasons.

I carried a lot before it was lets just say en vogue in the states too. Lots of folks did. Concealed and who would ever know.

Pastor asked me once after concealed carry passed, would I have one in church. I simply said that changes not a single thing with me. He then realized what I meant.

We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....
