Fun Fact: The Beef Stew MRE is one of only two that have remained in the 24-meal lineup continuously since the mid 80s. It is so similar to the canned stew that many call it the "Dinty MRE". The fact that it is a highly prized one tells you a lot about some of the other menu MRE choices. Or about the taste preferences of young soldiers, more likely.

I'm a Dinty Moore fan, especially after shoveling out after a big storm, etc.

But we don't call it "dog food". We save that nickname for canned hash. ha ha!

Had some this past fall. Added some prime rib leftovers. Perked it up considerable. That was the first time I had had any Dinty Moore stew in years.

Haven't thought about DM in a long time! I did think about Hormel chili and hash the other day as I drove by the Hormel plant.

I've quit eating several things for that reason.

Related to the Dinty Moore discussion:

Last year, I was hiking in the Kachina Wilderness Area which is near Flagstaff. I had hiked all the way to the top of one of the highest points in Arizona (the peak I hiked to the top of was 12K feet - it’s called Fremont Peak BTW) and was on my way down at about the 11K foot level (there are no trails on my hike up and back to the peak I went to) when I discovered an unopened, rusty, missing the label can of Dinty Moore that someone had dropped from their pack in the Wilderness Area. The only way I know it was Dinty Moore can was the lid has kind of a painted label.

I brought it down off the mountain. Who knows how long it was up there. The many feet of snow covering it each winter. The untold number of freeze and thaw cycles. It sounds like water when you shake it. It’s on my front porch on a small table as a sort of antique and discussion piece. I know someday, that can is gonna rupture and don’t want it in the house when it does.

Loved it as a kid. Mom would serve it in the 60's/early 70's when Dad was working in highway construction and he was gone a lot. I picked up a can a few years ago just to rekindle an old memory. It was basically inedible.

Sounds like my Wolf chili experience. It has gone way downhill.

It is not high class hot sauce, but that [bleep] can fix anything my wife cooks! I owe my sanity to that [bleep]!

cut it with some macaroni or something and it makes it slightly more palatable.

I still enjoy it and have half a dozen cans in the cupboard, good stuff. It definitely beats MREs , of which I've eaten far too many, many with the added pleasure of added grit from blowing sand.

I have six or eight cans out in my shop. I put it in the travel trailer when we are hunting. Don't stock it when my wife is along camping but my grandkids love it. I also like it for a quick meal.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.
